Re: Some way to contact Kyouryuu and Kruel?
They are two of the top old school authors for Descent but neither of them has released a map in ten years! Probably not on the scene anymore.

Re: Opinions about the Entropy Experiment
I'm not replicating any of my posts because I don't want to cross-post, but in the Descent Single Player thread you can find a pretty decent write up I just made for Level 2 on Entropy, which just by looking at the map is easily the biggest offender in terms of symmetry.

Re: Symmetric level
I played Level 2 of Entropy, rescuing all hostages and destroying every robot. What a behemoth of a map, this thing took me some 55 minutes to hunt everything down and get out not even counting save/reload time! To be honest the symmetry really didn't kill the experience for me or even make it 'bori...

Re: Symmetric level
Perfectly symmetric levels are no fun. It could work in Doom... I've seen you on the Doom forums before, by the way (Doom is another game I played a huge amount), so nice to have you in both places. :) Regarding symmetric Doom levels, there's a somewhat notorious Doom mod with quite a few instances...

Symmetric level
I guess this is an offspring from another forum section but I wanted to ask it in poll form. Also note that when I say 'complete level symmetry', I am only referring to levels that are 100% or nearly 100% symmetrical in layout (i.e. many Entropy series levels); I am NOT referring to levels that mere...

Re: The best and crudest designed levels of D1
D1 levels: If crudest means worst, I'd have to agree about Level 5. It isn't 'bad', but (75% of) it really takes the term 'corridor shooter' to the extreme most literal possible iteration. Yes there are entire corridor only areas in other levels but in those cases, it's fine in moderation. About lar...

Re: D2 Singleplayer Level: Wolfenstein
I'd really be for getting Doom or Doom II in Descent. Starting with Hangar or Entryway (or even System Control or Congo). Man Plutonia Experiment for Descent, if it ever happened, could be one hard mod! It might actually work to start with a four-level mission of all of the first levels, as they are...

So it's (Maximum) not even close to being just a 'rehash' of Vertigo split into smaller levels?

It's not about the quality of Maximum, I just don't want to then move to Vertigo and be playing the same thing over again 50% of the time.

All I know is D1's designs are indeed less 'advanced' but I prefer the original campaign to D2 (can't say Vertigo, because I haven't properly played it yet).

If the question this thread titles from is only about strictly FS versus CS, then I have quite a single answer for it :
Texture variety and fun factor.

Covering original games only: D1 changes: Not much to be honest, between FS, CS, and Retribution, it's already my favorite. D2 changes: Go with maps like Maximum instead except perhaps expanded slightly. Shorter levels and more texture semi-freedom go a long way here. Vertigo like would definitely h...

I know not everything is the same, but: you can have (some) D1 textures, you can have D1 doors, you can use only D1 weapons in most levels if you desire so, and most regular D1 robots are available. So I'm not arguing D1 has its own charm, but it's not like you can't do ANYTHING for a D1 feel, eithe...

Which Descent do enjoy CUSTOM (solo) content for more?
Well since this seems to be creeping into the originals thread, I thought I'd solve this issue by splitting it off and creating another poll. Personally I pick Descent II pretty much hands down because there are so many more awesome campaigns for it IMO. But what's your pick?

Well, far as custom missions are concerned, D2 indeed gives us much more possibilities. Personally I wouldn't mind weapon balance tweaks, though, to bring them back to their D1 values. Okay then probably anything with standard mission goals (three keys, reactor/boss robot, and exit) is likely okay then. Note (and thanks to Alter-Fox for helping me figure this out)
Black Prophecy in XL will NOT work correctly unless you manually set your hires_sounds value to 2! You cannot have them turned off in the cfg nor can they be set to 1.

At least Enemy Vignettes, is MUCH harder in XL. Not sure about the original. You have a slight advantage in XL though; robots generator robots behave 'passive' at first for 0.5-1 second or so. Looking through the levels, I'd say some of the authors got the TEW concept while others didn't, but everyo...

I have played the first 3 levels of TEW like five times and like those all a lot. I really find Level 3 impressive for just how tiny the actual size is compared to the amount of gameplay in that map (not to mention, the cool shape). But Pumo's and Darkhorse's first offerings don't disappoint either....

It's well deserved DFW. :) Having played The Lost Levels I am definitely a fan, although I didn't use the new ship and weapons (I didn't feel like dealing with a faster ship). So I was thinking, maybe it would be appropriate to put together a list a classic/potentially classic campaigns from post-2004, after DFW made her list: [The (R) means at least Rebirth is required to run the mission stably, (R?) means I'm not sure] * means I'm pretty sure it's unquestionably popular...

I like what you did to Level 16.
Converted it from fire (D1 version) to ice (D2 version) overall theme, so each theme gets the same number of levels, but kept the damaging sectors from D1 intact by revolving it around a refinery where heated oil flows. Cool idea!
