PC Gamer had an article about people who sell in-game items for real cash.
There was a guy who did nothing but everquest all day & night. Made a good living selling the items on ebay.
His highest sale was $3000.
That's not all, there's sites out there dedicated to selling game money.
One: www.ige.com
This act of selling game money (along with another problem) has totally destablized FFXI's economy. I won't go into it here, but in short it's really ruined the game for people who don't spend real world money for game cash as they can't keep up with the ones that do.

Reminds me of when some douche in DiII:LOD stole a bunch of elite uniques / special crafted items from a friend of mine and tried pawning them off on some other people.
We handled it as you should in an online game where items are traded or found etc...etc..We had some friends track the guy down. Ended up taking his accounts and getting his stuff and our stuff back
Then, we had blizz shutdown his accounts. Why on earth would anyone kill someone over something online? Nevermind, don't answer that . Again, I'd post my retard award but my server is temp. down.

Heck, our very own Descent 3 has it's very own e-tards who get violent because they can't compete. If I recall correctly, someone was going to beat up Suncho at a LAN, because he thought Alex was hacking. Mind you, this was a a grown man going after a lil 15 or 16 year old High School kid.
Why is it so surprising that an MMORPG would generate this kind of response to theft of what is, in essence, representative of so much more intensive time and effort?
