The way to power level is to have a healer thats about 15 levels ahead of you NOT join you in a party, but heal you as you fight. This way you'll get gobs of XP w/o the loss. I was gonna do this for ya with my pld, but you're not on my server.
And it took you 3 hours to get to lvl 5?
I've got 3 jobs to lvl 5 in ~2hrs (all alone)... guess it's just cause i've been playin so long.

You need to sell stuff at the auction house.
The easiest way early on is to have the IM guards cast Signet on you (which you should always have), then the encounters you fight will drop crystals. Sell them in groups of 12. Check the price history to see what the going rate for said crystal is.
In my server 12 fire crystals are going for 1600 gill.

i unluckily picked the crappy city, the economy is terrible. i havent been able to sell a group of crystals for more than 500g yet. i managed to find out an easy way to make money, but it takes money first
if you're in bastok, get a decent pole for around 4 or 5k, some insect paste, and fish in the market in the moat. 12 moat carp are a few k, you could easily make about 12 grand in a half hour.
i was doing it today but i kept using cheap poles that break often
i just need to whore myself out to ww for some loot to get me a pole

Mages, stay away from poles that have no mp, or int/mnd boosts unless you're soloing. Mages shouldn't be attacking with anything but their magic.
And btw, Bamboo rod is the best to lvl your skills early on.
Btw, earth crystals and water crystals always have and always will be worth crap. Get fire crystals.
Gobs drop em, as do orcs (Good ol San d'Oria, best nation around. )
I made quite a bit early on doin that.
And a tip fo the n00bs: Parties increase the number of and chance of crystals dropping. Bigger the party the more you drop.

yeah, i managed to organize a party of 5 yesterday for the first time, ended up playing together almost 5 hours. Although xp is harder to come by this way, treasure did seem alot more common.
ffxi has to have the best community i've ever seen, more people willing to help you out than i would have ever imagined. glad i picked this game up.
btw, how do you get a linkshell? the people i met were all 9's and 10's warrior/mage mix, and i'm the most knowledgeable one (heh) so we're all poor and lost. we talked about getting one together, but i havent the slightest clue what to do...?

I never really understood the fees in the beginning as well, but the amount of servers and bandwidth required for a game of this scale is huge. Not to mention the support team for them as well as the add on packs and little changes the game goes through.
It is worth the 12.95 IMHO. I haven't been disappointed yet. SInce I'm not a big movie goer, I see this as my entertainment expense.

Linkshells are sold in each nation.
They're 8000 gil.
It's basically a bit more convinient freind list. It's not the best idea to start your own unless you give em out to everyone. At this point in the game all but the new players have a LS or 3.
And full parties are the ONLY way to get good xp.
I'd like to see you pull 220xp a monster every 5 mins alone
And to clear up a common misconception:
The greater the level range in your party, the worse the xp is for EVERYONE. Not just the lowest lvl.
Party i was in last night (lvl 45-46) and we were pullin 180-220 a monster till we got a lvl 48 guy (lvls 45-48) and the xp dropped to 80-120ish. So keep them lvl ranges low!

This one guy got so addicted to this game he had to delete all of his profiles and accounts to get free of it.... I don't really like games that are addicting, but then, I play BF1942&V almost everyday so I guess an RPG would be any different? Yeas. RPGs are mainly boring... I had an addicition to Animal Crossing tho..
you need to fish and stock op on teh quus, 5 or 6 stacks of 12, and then head to bastok. you need to go to the light house in S. Gustaberg and poke around until you find the bush (back, left side) thats named ??? and trade it 1 quus. give it a second, and a crab named bubbly bernie will appear. kill him, and pickup the steam clock. run back to the bastok markets and sell it to the lady in the house next to the notary, you have to speak to her first to initiate teh quest. 500g. it goes for 400-450 at the AH. you can do this as many times as you want, but you can only carry 1 clock at a time.
this sucks teh ass by yourself, becuase of all the running. but if you party up and run a train on teh crab, and have 1 person break off and go get the money each time you get a clock while the others kill it, then split the money, you'll make about 100g a minute or more, more if you have enough people. it takes about 5 minutes to go kill bubbly bernie (the 500 dollar crab) and then repeat.
the ability to leave to whichever area of bastok from your mog house makes this 100x easier and quicker. you want to exit from the bastok mines area, then kill bubbly bernie and return to the mines. go to the mog house, exit house from markets and go sell the clock. house from market to mines, out to light house etc. the way to get this ability in bastok is to give the mythril outside of the port bastok mog house an amyrilis. her name starts with a v.
optionally, you can save time by buying quus at the AH for 1000g or so and do it that way. quicker, less profit. i usually buy them when i can because i like to save time rather than money. if you get a system down where you pool all the money together and split it and take turns running the clocks back, you'll rack it up in no time. just make sure you have enough quus and enough people to efficiently have someone returning every time you fight.
he seems to get tougher as you level up, it started out giving me 50 xp and ive been getting 50 xp and having to fight him at about the same toughness each level up. im not sure about this, because i just figured this out and have only fought him across a 3 level span, but this seems to be the case though.
gonna take you alot of time to get the kind of loot for a character that high up though. you may be better off hunting monsters that drop things worth 100k+. not sure how long that takes or if this system is really even worth the time, but for a guy starting out (lvl 11 warrior) its the best way to make money that ive found so far.
edit: oh yeah, he also drops water crystals and hangs out with goblins who drop crystals sometimes, so you can make money that way too. kill a goblin or 3 on your way back from selling the clock and get some lightning/fire/dark crystals from them if you're lucky.

hrm... not what i thought.
i wouldn't exactly call that 100k a min
I can make 500 gil a pop on the airship quests.
Or farm orcs for 30-60 gil a piece (they die in 2, 3 hits).
At lvl 48, bernie isn't exactly a challenge.
Though, a blm could do this one very quickly.
Go kill bernie, warp back to HP, complete the quest, run back out. rinse. repeat.

i farm in one of 3 places. Battlia is awesome for tiger fangs. A stack goes for 8.4k if you give it to the quest npc in San. Passhow is pretty good too, theh goobue and the malboro have decenet drops and u can hunt the the two NM's while there. Perhaps teh best farming spot in the entire game is in ordelle's caves. You can hunt Stroper Chymes for their Archer's ring drop. The rings go for 300k and the monsters that drop them aren't NM.
