Usually I prefer WinZIP because I find it more comfortable to use, but today I had to pack a huge amount of data, so I tried both:
WinZIP 9.00: 436 MB
WinRAR 3.51: 384 MB
Doh! WinRAR took quite a bit longer than WinZIP though.

I agree. 7Zip is, imho, the best. Still, plain old ZIP is the most common. It would be bad manners to package things for other people in .7z.

Still, self-extracting archives aren't something that you would want to, for example, upload to a website that a Mac or Linux user might access (e.g. D2x
).

7-zip is way better than RAR with some files, and way worse with others.

Asrale = teh n00b.
/me pats DOS version of PKZip and PKUnzip
Seriously though, I've used WinRAR for years and love it. It may be shareware, but it still works after 40 days.

Agreed: RAR files must be self extracting - and this is a problem, as many email servers are set to deny executables.
This being so, ZIP, set to \"best\" ius arguably superior.
