\"Back when the greats were playing\"....

I kind of look forward to seeing how CD will treat people.
I've noticed that, although D1 and D2 players mostly share the same skill set, those players and D3 players seem to rely on entirely different things. A good D3 player tends to be awesome at dogfighting, but not necessarily as adept at the kind of blind-alley sucker punch tactics I see a lot in D1/2.
Depending what CD does to the balance, both groups of players, and those who have mastered all the games, may have a bit of learning to do.

I think everyone will have a bit of learning to do to get used to the cloaking system. However, I'd think gameplay balance would more heavily favor dogfighters who work well in small areas--it looks from the screenshots like there will definitely be some room to have some good dogfights.
As usual, though, modders and levelmakers will have quite a bit of say in how the game is played.

That was the topic. .. sounds kinda wierd now.. and a lot more appropriate.ReadyMan wrote:It's going on a year since the D3 demo was released, and about 9 months since Retail D3....yet there seems to be a lot of 'nostalgic reverence' to the first few months of D3 in many of the threads.
Well, if it is still topical, these days the answer is pretty obvious.
Everyone sucks. Plain and simple. Of the awesome D3 players from back in 2000/2001, almost everybody has moved on; you have maybe one or two guys who are still uber (not that I'd know since I haven't touched it in a while anyway, but the \"top 20\" lists speak volumes about the competition), and the rest who are just mediocre to reasonably good.
Cynical, yes, but that's how it is with a rapidly aging game. D1 and 2 have a similar situation, except it seems to me more of the top-end IDL crew stuck around. Still a number of the legends have gone on to other things (Birdseye, Karash, Glock, Ender, Sirian... haven't seen them play the game proper in a few years now), but there are still a handful of the sufficiently awesome sticking around... Bubble, Jediluke and MD-1224 come to mind...

uhh i think anyone with common sense wouldnt call someone that cheats great. besides 90% of the greats have lanned together and met each other

Because there are a few not-that-good-but-annoying-with-cheats players out there. Nobody gets to be great with hax -- they lead to laziness. You never develop your game if you've got hax. But sometimes players get to be OK and then hack to try to be a little bit better. That's what anticheat players protect you from.Bet51987 wrote:But why the anticheat servers?

There aren't as many cheaters around as I thought there were when I first got into multiplayer about a year and a half ago. I was a complete multiplayer n00b, so I had quite a few \"They must be hacking! Nobody can be that good!\" moments. Since then, I've found that in most cases, those players were really just that skilled/experienced.
On the other hand, I run anti-cheat on my servers, and it has caught a few of the 'bad apples'. Mostly it's been the usual things, like pps settings abuse... but it's also caught a couple of the troublemakers who come in with wildly hacked weapons and/or movement.
For example, a few weeks ago, a player came into a BillTheCat game on a non-AC server I had joined, flying through walls and using a super-fast fusion hack. I did a \"piggyback observer\" and got some screenshots just to make sure. At first, most of the legit players laughed it off (the cheater was still not very good, and couldn't make kills even with the hacked weapons), but it got annoying after a while. Eventually, most of the players ended up switching to another game, which happened to be on an AC server. It was rather gratifying to see that almost as soon as the hacker followed, he/she got kicked!
Anyway, all that to say: there aren't that many hacks/cheaters around, but the AntiCheat servers seem to be helping a bit to keep them out of some of the popular levels.

Getting accused of cheating is one of the greatest compliments ever.Foil wrote:There aren't as many cheaters around as I thought there were when I first got into multiplayer about a year and a half ago. Actually, It can be quite annoying and usually makes players not want to play.aaronb wrote:Getting accused of cheating is one of the greatest compliments ever.Foil wrote:There aren't as many cheaters around as I thought there were when I first got into multiplayer about a year and a half ago. Agreed completely. I've only been called a cheater once, and in response, I quickly typed "Thank you".aaronb wrote:Getting accused of cheating is one of the greatest compliments ever.Foil wrote:There aren't as many cheaters around as I thought there were when I first got into multiplayer about a year and a half ago. G-damn, Sarge!
That is one UGLY mug there!
AH atlanta that was a fun LAN. Uberfest '99.
And yes, I won the Quake2 tourney in that one. Don't ask about the descent part of the tournament, I sucked hard.
Thanks for bringing up the memories. How ya doing Sarge!? Still in old cheddarland? How 'bout them Bears!

You weren't the only one who sucked, Neitz. I played drunk. You, Me, Starfire and Lioness went to Chili's before the match and I got smacked. Then I picked Darkhall to play in. BZZZZT! WRONG!
If you had a better non-drunken partner, it would have been a 2fer for you. Oh well, such is life.
By the way-- two of the four mugs you gave me still live. One broke in the dishwasher, the other fell off of my pinball machine. The remaining two- Best. Beer. Mugs. Ever. Must have had the flow of a years worth on Milwaukee suds flow through them. Cheers!

Man, I haven't played this game in AGES, yet I still participate on the forums. I wonder what the next 6 degree game will be that ends up bringing everyone together again.
And for those that don't know. Admiral Thrawn = Korrupt

\"Back when the greats were playing\"....
I might be crazy but it seems to me that only the err formerly great pilots & most likely players damn near that genetic pool are still playing D3 and I would even go further in saying that the small band of Descent players currently playing numbers probably 200 players and the European community. Don't be surprised if it's more like 100 aliases involved in that total that are experts widely known for years and years. In fact it would be perhaps an interesting thread for known pilots to \"come out of the closet\" with their aliases .... I'll show you mine if you show me yours\" <---mmmm something vaguely familiar about that, OH nevermind that was after spin the bottle D'oh!
