The Music Thread

What kind of music does everyone here listen to anyway? Do you play and instrument, and if so, what? I'll start.

My taste in music is firmly rooted in rock, but I also enjoy jazz, funk, classical, etc. Basically, just about anything that isn't hip hop or electronica. I mostly like Japanese indie rock groups such as the pillows, Number Girl, Sambomaster, Zazen Boys, The Chewinggum Weekend, Nino Trinca, etc. I would be surprised if anybody here had heard of any of these bands (though some the pillows' music was prominently featured in the anime series FLCL).

I also like North American and British indie rock bands and artists (such as Broken Social Scene, The Wrens, The Format, etc.), classic rock (Cream, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck), and progressive/experimental/post-hardcore (Rush, At The Drive-In, Maps and Atlases, Fall of Troy, Mars Volta, Dream Theater, etc.)

I'm an avid guitarist (mostly electric), and for a while now, music has taken over gaming as my main hobby.

So, what kinds of music are you guys into?

I started listening to the classics on my dad's records: Zep/Floyd/Skynyrd/CCR/ZZ Top, the list goes on. When Motley Crue came out, I shifted to that genre, and then I found the heavy stuff, Metallica/Slayer/etc in the late 80's, and it has become my overall preference, adding Pantera, White Zombie, and similar artists. I like electronica only in an extremely narrow range, and picked up some Jazz a few years ago, gravitating towards artists like Craig Chaquico, Fattburger, Boney James, Dave Koz..

I play guitar. I started when I first heard And Justice For All. Right then and there I decided I wanted to play that and Blackened. Then of course, the more I heard from them, the more of the songs I wanted to learn. After I did learn all of Metallica's stuff, they went and pussed out, so I stopped learning them and moved to Skynyrd and learned most of their songs. With Skynyrd leads under my belt, I was cocky enough to think that I would pick up a few Joe Satriani CD's and learn his stuff.

Well, I'm still working on him...I have eight down pretty solid so far. Only took me 2 years

Which Satriani Testi? What kind of axe you slinging these days? Better not be some Jap made Ibanez or something...

I don't think Ibanez guitars are that great, but I would take an off-the-shelf Japanese Fender over a production American model anyday. The good stuff never gets imported to the US.

If I recall, Zuruck, you have a pretty nice gear collection yourself. Les Paul, Tele, Music Man Axis, Strat (I think), and a Mesa of some sort.

My favorite song is Letterbomb, especially if it and Extraordinary Girl are played in their normal sequence. My second is Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana. My third would be Coming Clean by Green Day.

For instruments, I play guitar (electric & acoustic) bass, drums, mandolin, harmonica, and I can play them all pretty good except for the mandolin or harmonica. My favorite song to play is Letterbomb, I can play it PERFECTLY, not a single screw-up, not a muted string, nothing. I know most of Dookie, Warning, and American Idiot, as well as about half of Nevermind, In Utero, Insomniac, and 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.

I own a Gibson L-6 (Green), A Fender Stratocaster (Purple), some acoustic guitar that is pretty common, a mandolin, and some types of drums and harmonica.

Yes, I have two Ibanez's. They sound perfect. I don't like the stratocasters, or any others I've tried, really...don't have the smoothness or a fast neck, and worse, they're only 22 fret.

I play Saxophone, tin whistle, and fife. None of them very well.

I wouldn't mind hearing you play Summer Song. I can't stand Ibanez guitars...the necks are too thin. I like playing guitars with thick necks, my les paul has the 50s style neck which feels like a 2x4. My explorer has the thinnest neck I think...it's my little speed guitar.

For smoothness you just have to strip the neck. Get some Formby's stripper and take the laquer off the neck. When it's completely off...sand the neck and finish it off with very, very small grit. Oil the neck with linseed, buff it out, and you have a fast, smooth neck. Just be careful around glue joints!!

Ahh I love Pink Floyd. I have worked with countless amps, effects, everything to master that band. I have the most fun playing their stuff though in my band. Nothing beats smoking a joint and playing Have A Cigar...nothing.

Wow, Zuruck and I agree on something!

The LP Standard 50's necks don't feel that big to me, though. The Historic '54-'56 necks feel great, although most people consider them "too big."

I'm impressed that you have the Flaming Lips on that list there Jon, kudos. They are a terrific band. I like way to much to even talk about it.

Testi, you da man if you able to hit Skynyrd. I can't seem to play their songs with the right feel...I don't know. They have too many parts going on for me to isolate one and play along.

I forgot to ask earlier...do you really, I mean really need 24 frets? 99% of the best guitarists of all time only had 22...I've had no interest in 24 frets or a 7 stringer. It's hard enough to play a 6 string...why make it worse. Plus I play out of a Mesa so I don't need any extra low end.

I use all 24, and not just the 1st string. I don't want to bend up to the 24th fret note, and I want to be able to bend a 24th like it was a 12th.

I play Skynyrd with a slightly aggressive touch. I pull from my metal background to give it a little edge. It sounds great (on a good day, hehe

) I can fit extra notes in without distracting from the main sequence.
