Ok, its an artsy question, so I put it into the Gallery.
How do I save a tga with transparency? Specifically so I can convert it into an ogf ship logo. Or does ogf support transparency?
I use PhotoPlus usually, and converts to tga, but when it does, I lose transparency. <sigh>

You can use GIMP 2.0 for windows, it automatically saves the Alpha channel in the TGA file.

isn't a TGA with transparency a 28 bit format?

AFAIK not. TGA supports 16, 24 and 32bits/pixel.

I'll try gimp, thanks for the advice.
Actually, I need to set up a linux partition on my new machine anyway, might be time to try and do that.

the TGA file has to be 32-bit in order to have the alpha channel, at least that is the case in Photoshop. Its haven't found all the customized saving tools in GIMP yet.

8 bits......
32 Bit TGA = 24bit TrueColor/8 bit Alpha

So NO alpha chan possible (and therefore not transparency possible) for D3 ship logos since they have to come from 24 bit tgas?

Oh! My instructions said 24bit only. I'll try 32 bit. thanks.

make it easier for lack of definition in the instructions
24bit TGA + 8bit Alpha = 32Bit TGA (256R/256G/256B/256A)

And it worked perfectly. Thank you VERY much folks!
Just save the tga as 32 bit and it preserves the transparency.
