important survey regarding your connection speed

Post by Do_Checkor »

an important survey regarding your connection speed has been made here:

http://www.descentbb.com/viewtopic.php?t=2151

I'd like to ask you to contribute there since I do not want to have the complete poll going here too...

thanks in advance...

Can you guys please keep your personal opinions about .com out of this thread? Just state what connection you have if you don't want to go and vote.

8Mbps/786Kbps - cable

Note: I am currently testing my [RIP]Rockies servers at minimum 9PPS. If anyone is getting auto-kicked just after joining my server, that's most likely the issue. Just increase your PPS settings, and it'll be fine.

my config is always set to accept 12pps from any server

It would be nice if those servers also have min pps kick

That's exactly why this is being discussed! The servers who run AntiCheat do have a "min PPS kick". The reason Checkor put up this poll is that serverops need to figure out what is reasonable for min PPS, given the distribution of connection speeds. So far it looks like most people have at least DSL nowadays, so higher "min PPS" is probably reasonable.

That used to be the staple plan in New Zealand a year or two back. Sort of what you get when you have bloated monopolies that care more about the bottom line than giving their customers any real service.

Ah, gotcha.

Yes, if we could get everyone playing at higher PPS (and auto-kick those who use low PPS to make themselves harder to hit), it would really improve the game.

A question here. The D3 community is very small as is. Do we really want to keep people out of the public servers just because they have a lousy connection? Or is it more important just to encourage people to play?

The reason that some in the ServerOp community are carefully looking into this instead of just making arbitrary decisions, is that we don't want to alienate players who are still on dialup connections.

However, what brought this issue up in the first place is the quality of gameplay, and the fact that there are still some players who intentionally abuse PPS settings, which has also caused people to quit playing D3.

So, with the rise of higher-speed internet, we just want to know if there are any who still play on dialup. If not, we can safely start adjusting the minimum PPS settings upward. Of course, there are still plenty of servers out there who don't enforce minimum PPS, and everyone that I know in the ServerOp community is willing to make accomodations upon request.

@Kilarin: Foil is absolutely right: We don't plan to alienate people who are on modem, but we want to get rid of the fools who either set their PPS rate (by network settings in the D3 launcher) INTENTIONALLY low OR just are too lazy OR maybe just don't know about where / why to set.

I think we already lost dozens - maybe even hundrets of players because of shitty connects and a skippy / lossy / laggy gameplay. And there was nothing we could do since there was no \"min. pps setting\" until SuperSheep implemented this in his \"Anticheat Server MOD\". Now we have the chance AND there are almost no modem users left these days. So we would be some dumbass lamers if we wouldn't do it now, IMO. :-)

Quest DSL, 256/256 :(

The only one I know on dial-up is Coretess/Woodhippy, who plays regularly, though I'm sure there are others.
