USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow sectio n. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003 , \"those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,\" recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. \"It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.\"

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the \"hair on my neck stood up.\" \"It had a big meaning to it for all of us,\" he said. \"They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.\"

The ship's motto? \"Never Forget\"

So Roid, you laugh at this? You also laugh when the towers came down? What part of KB's post do you find amusing? That we used materials from a building attacked by terroists to build a ship to counter them with? Or the part where the foundry workers felt something spiritual when handling the WTC steel?

Of course in Aussie land freedom of expression is perhaps best termed "constrained" and Roidy can come to this board to freely "express" himself:

"In an unprecedented attack on democratic rights and freedom of artistic expression, police in the Australian state of Victoria illegally, and without any prior warning, removed an artwork displaying a burnt and tattered Australian flag from a Melbourne gallery last month."

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2006/feb20 ... -f15.shtml

Nice Post KB as I for one am glad to see the WTC steel going into something more symbolic and useful than garden statuary.

Link wasn't intended for info on ship. Link was to show the true socialist "We Can't Have Dissent" govt. that Roidy lives under.

As for Tiger, perhaps they should of used the steel to make him a enlarged cod piece.

So we took the metal from WTC and built a warship out of it?

Maybe a more positive, symbolic use would have been to somehow employ it in the construction of the Freedom Tower.

Just a thought.

The problem with symbolism is it can be taken too far, and then I start to cringe at how stupid it all sounds... this news release is better than a documentary clip on the subject though.

In Christchurch, New Zealand, we have a much better use for some of the remains of the WTC: building a sculpture to commemorate the fallen firefighters of 911.

Image

And info' on the sculpture is here:
http://archived.ccc.govt.nz/MediaReleas ... 144808.asp

Personally, I think it is despicable to use that steel in a fighting craft - just despicable. The sort of dumb-sh!7 thing Dumbya would order.

Why, yes; yes, we can have dissent. 8)

I think both are fine uses of the recovered structural metal.
Mobius wrote:There is no "good" or "evil". These are simply subjective constructs within human brains. Nothing is inherently good or bad - things just ARE.

Ascribing definitions to things based on nothing but subjective feelings doesn't work; what you think is evil, I think is logical. What I think is evil, you may consider goodness.
Make up your mind, Moby. According to you, the sculpture in Christchurch and the USS New York "just are".

As such, I say, go get 'em, New York!

Woodchip you never cease to amaze me. You're like the walking stereotype of a backasswards right wing idiot. Roid writes \"guffaw\" for whatever reason and you start bashing his \"socialist\" government.

Maybe he wrote guffaw because we took steel from the remnants of an attack that killed thousands of innocents to build a war machine that will undoubtedly kill thousands of innocents. That really encapsulates the American spirit.

Heh. Yeah. Guffaw is right.

Woody, Sirius summed it up for me. i just can't help but find this kindof rhetoric and symbolism funny nowdays, i read Koolbear's rhetoric and expected HE-MAN to come bursting through my screen BY TEH POWER OF GREYSKULL.

Rhetoric is so stupid, it always seems to tickle my lollerbone. As it reminds me of my first years in school, aged 6, running around saving teh world from evils like our cartoon heros and being all SPARTAAAAAAA!! .....n.

Thundercats hoooooooooOOOooOooooo0000oooOo00000OOOO00O0oo

but if this thing is AMPHIBIOUS then that's pretty kickass! Is that true?! :D

Yeah, what the hell. Lets scrap all our military equipment and build peace parks instead. Lets disband our military so we can show the world we really are nice folks and everyone will love us.

That's not what I'm saying either Woody. All I'm saying is that I don't think a warship is the proper way to commemorate innocent victims who died in the WTC attacks.

... because you think it will create thousands more innocent victims. That's like saying, gee, my friend got shot, so I learned to use a gun to protect myself... OMG THE IRONY IM GONNA GO SHOOT SOMEONE ELSES FRIEND! It's highly unlikely that's going to be the result. (Roid, if rhetoric tickles your lollerbone, you should be laughing at things people on BOTH sides have said in this thread.)

Honestly, I think the symbolism is cool. Turning the very thing they destroyed into a defense against them. I also think it'd be cool if other bits of the WTC remains were used to create parks and other such things. Take that which was destroyed, and turn it into many symbols -- "we're not going to sit back and take it", "we're going to continue to live in freedom", "we still have hope", "we honor the firefighters and police who died trying to save others", etc. The ship only took 24 tons of steel; there's plenty left for other uses.

No, using your analogy, I think their point is more along the lines of, "My friend got shot, so I'm using his stuff to construct a weapon in his memory" - "A weapon? You really think that's how he wanted to be remembered?".

To some, the ship may symbolically say, "We're still strong", but to others, it just symbolically represents more war and death.

To me, it's just simply questionable.

Well, it's more like "my friend got shot in the back by some racists, so I'm using part of his stuff to fund self-defense training and part of it for upgraded police presence".

It's simply immature to view this as a mere expression of war and death, and to dismiss those who view it as anything else. There are those who think the most appropriate thing to do with WTC remains is make a big park or a memorial, symbols of the brotherhood of all people. There are also those who think it's appropriate to make a warship as a symbol of how important it is to defend ourselves and our way of life. There's lots of WTC debris to go around.

Some people grieve, and move on from their grief, in different ways from others. Building a ship specifically designed to combat those who attacked us is the way one group of people have chosen to move ahead. You may perhaps find that entertaining, but be adult enough to show some respect to those who take it seriously.

Good post, nice ship, and a great use for the steel.

I worked within 1-3 blocks of the WTC many, many, years. (3 different buildings - on John St., William St., and Park Row.) I commuted there every day on the \"E\" subway train, getting off at the station at the lower level of the towers. I had breakfast & lunch there most every working day & bank accounts at WTC mall banks. I have albums full of pictures. Heck, I bought my 1st hard drive (for an IBM PS/2 Model 30) at the WTC Radio Shack.

By miracles or coincidences I survived that day. Some of my co-workers and thier families weren't so lucky. To this day, it's hard to explain what it's like walking up the subway steps into the street instead of the WTC mall.

I saw incredible acts of heroism on 9/11, and not just rescue workers. At any moment, those buildings could have toppled over instead of going straight down. Every day people still helped each other to safety. Not one person who needed care left my office unaided.

Arthur Ashe said, \"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost\". Helping somebody down the stairs make you a hero? On that day it did, even if you were a block away. The greater memorial the USS NEW YORK represents isn't the ship, but the valor of the crew that serves, and the country behind it.

I'm sure ship and crew will live up to the motto \"Never Forget\" with honor. 8)

According to Snopes, the pic KB linked is of the USS San Antonio, the first ship in its class, rather than the USS New York.

Kickass tech data from wikipedia says it can launch up to four CH-64s or two V-22s at once (with 5 more V22s onboard.) The V-22 is an incredibly cool helicopter/airplane my wife worked on that can deploy 32 marines at once, and that's an awful lot of marines to be able to drop virtually anywhere.

V-22s? (looks it up)...

Image

dude those things were deathtarps! I thought they gave up on them coz everyone kept crashing them spectacularly (made awesome vids though ahah) :D

I'm still trying to figure out why they call these ships amphibious... they can't go on land... so wtf? The inner space can carry and launch hovercraft, but that doesn't mean the SHIP ITSELF can hover on land. So is it just called a amphibian transport craft because it transports amphibian craft... that's pretty shady. I could call a mac-truck an amphibious transport craft by the same reasoning - it can carry and launch a hovercraft.
Guess i just plain don't know my military designations

Ive never heard the the Osprey referred to as \"amphibious\". Perhaps for amphibious assault as they can drop troops in just about any location (including over water in the Seal's case).

This is a troop transport, not a vehicle lift. It can hover, verticle and/or runway take off. It's a great hybrid, but it doesn't does not excel in any of its functions extraordinarily well. They are testing one here in Portland for inclement weather. ... Not that we've had a lot of that of late.
