What Operating System do you Play Descent 3 on?
Just like it says. I can't remember if this was asked or not.
If you have more than 1 OS, choose the primary that you use the most.

no it doesn't. Descent 3 doesn't really care as far as whether it will run or not. Where vista is concerned.....baaawwwhhahahahaha...Spaceboy wrote:Windows option needs to be broken up into 95, 98, xp, me, vista.
The only reason I broke Mac up is because it uses two completely different code sets.

Yep, Descent3 will run on any Win32-compatible OS.Duper wrote:no it doesn't. Descent 3 doesn't really care as far as whether it will run or not.Spaceboy wrote:Windows option needs to be broken up into 95, 98, xp, me, vista.
In my experience, D3 runs better on Vista than it ever did on XP.Duper wrote:Where vista is concerned.....baaawwwhhahahahaha...

Speaking of... I remember Descent I being distrubited on a SuSE Linux system a long time ago... is that true?

There are 2 significantly different ways to play it on GNU/Linux:
you can use the native port by Loki, or you can run the Windows
version under GNU/Linux by using wine.
The latter works perfectly for me (it runs at least as good as
it did on Windows), although I've heard a few people complain
that it didn't work for them. If it works, it has the advantages of
avoiding the level checksum bug, being able to play every mod
that runs on Windows, and not needing a separate installation
of D3 in case you have a dual-boot configuration.
In both cases you can also run D3 inside a window.

Thanks Lion. I knew it was something like that.
The reason I've posted this is to see if Mac is worth considering (the old config) for the D3 1.5 patch. It's been one of the things holding it up.
I'm not registered on .com; maybe someone could post this there. I'll put it up on PD too. (why I JUST NOW thought of that is beyond me.) This last week or so's been kinda fuzzy.

from what i've heard its more like
XP>98>ME>Vista
playing on ME, and xp is totally different.
Re:
Windows ME was my first Microsoft computer, I've played D3 on that oldest system so much. After ME died, I got a new XP. Actually, D3 works on XP.Behemoth wrote:from what i've heard its more like

Windows NT sucks.

Yeah, that's why. All gamers hate that OS, but teachers like it.Duper wrote:NT was a networking platform. It was never intended for gaming.

I am, I believe, the very very last lousy player using Mac OS 9 to play D3. This makes me feel a bit like the last survivor of some ancient lost civilization.
My 'gaming box' is a vintage 2002 Apple desktop machine that dual boots OS 9 and X. (However, since I'm modem-bound these days, I haven't been playing for the last few months.)
For everything besides D3, I use OS X.
There's some confusion in this thread between D3 and the D1/2 ports. Like others, I have played D2X successfully on OS X. However, I have never heard of any form of D3 running natively on OSX.* If anybody knows something I don't, please tell me!
*Emulating OS9 in the OSX Classic mode renders D3 unplayable for me. And it still uses the OS9 binary, at any rate.

Re:
Very likely. The OS 9 version of D3 is one scary jalopy of an application, and harbors plenty of platform-specific bugs that nobody wants to fix.Krom wrote:I wonder if Mac users would have better luck emulating the windows version instead.
I'm going to look into running Windows D3 under Wine on OS X. I'll let you guys know if I have any luck.

I run D3 in Linux, exclusively. I've got the Loki official port I got off Ebay. It does have it's limitations, but it's not as buggy as using the windows version under wine, which I have done.
I did extensive benchmarking, and with medium-range hardware, there was no performance difference between the Windows and Linux versions (except for odd things with Windows sound drivers). With newer hardware, I don't know, but up to a geforce 6200 and a socket 754 Athlon 3200+ there was no noticeable difference. The Windows version using DX shows sparkles on powerups... that's the only game difference I could find.
If anybody's interested, I still have the Linux-specific files (and a howto) on my webserver. This allows you to install the Linux native version using Windows install CDs.

(EDIT)
I know a few people who still use Win98 to play Descent so they can use antique game controllers... like the Space Orb 360, for one. Though I'm pretty sure it's supported under Linux now. I've got a friend with one... need to give that a shot one day.

Windows now, Linux soon
Descent3 is about the only game I play these days. I voted for Windows, but since FunkyStickMan has posted the Linux files, I'll soon be Linux only.

Oh cool! I've been trying to get d3 to work on Ubuntu without success yet.FunkyStickman wrote:If anybody's interested, I still have the Linux-specific files (and a howto) on my webserver. This allows you to install the Linux native version using Windows install CDs.
Question, are these files actually in the public domain? No, I'm not threatening to turn anyone in, it's just that I'm a bit of a stickler for making certain I don't download illegal stuff. If I could find a d3 for linux, I'd be happy to spend cash on it.

They play on legacy systems because new PC Hardware is incompatible with old game controller hardware or they do not want to give up their 3dfx card or they still play in the IDL, or did not take the chance to get a Grendle USB adapter.FunkyStickman wrote:(EDIT)

My question to all you 1337 LINUX D3 players:
have you ever played against a new to nix D3 linux user from any other operating system D3 install??
Repeat after me... can you say - slidshowsux, burstingsux, skippinsux, playersux from the ROOT on linux!
It's not fun for the rest of us ...just to let you know.....
So - keep it at server level only for NIX - KTHXBYE
