IE 8?

Time to update to IE8 or should I wait?

If it has features that you need, or security advances over IE7, and you can deal with beta…go for it. If you have no need for it, why bother.

I personally never install beta software, so I can’t give my opinion on it. IE7 works just fine, so I will wait for it to be issued via windows update. And if it never is, well then I won’t use it untill my next OS.

Insurrectionist is right, the final release was back on the 16th.

From a user standpoint, there are a few nice features, like "Suggested Sites" (Firefox Awesome Bar) and Private Mode. They even threw in some original ideas .. the Accelerators let you select a location or address and get an instant map preview in the right-click menu, or select text and get fast translation. If you're an IE person, it's worth installing.

I'm a Firefox user and not going anywhere, but IE8 deserves a thumbs-up if only for the features that make a web developer's life easier - the improved CSS compliance and built-in debugging tools are welcome, albeit long overdue.

If you're using IE7, you should upgrade to IE8 pretty much right away. It is in final release, yes - and also fixes a lot of problems with IE7. Faster, much more secure, has some new \"convenience\" features etc etc.

While I'm still using Firefox most of the time at home, IE8 is at last a browser that the majority can use and not be ashamed of.

I installed IE8 on my work machine and was not impressed, it was much much slower. Still feels like its a beta. Going to hold off for now.

If it hasn’t been out for 6 months…it’s still beta.

But, thanks for the correction anyway.

Will they offer it as a \"windows update\" do ya think?

It'll be pushed out to automatic updates in 3 waves depending on the language ... English- or German-speaking users (+23 other languages) get it at the end of April. The last wave is at the end of June.

Try opening a Command Prompt and then execute:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

(having exited IE 8 first, of course)

This re-registers the ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library, and reportedly helps a lot of people get the improved IE 8 performance that should have been there. NOTE: If you're using Vista, you have to do this from an elevated command prompt (get the command prompt set to run as Administrator).

As for me on my XP systems that I've put IE 8 on, so far they have all worked well and were noticeably faster than IE 7. I still prefer FireFox mostly because of the add-ons I've become very fond of that are not available for IE.
