Is there a way to type words on a computer by using sign language?
Voice to text has gotten pretty good.
But I was thinking about how neat it would be to do away with a mouse and keyboard by just using your hands. And game controllers could be replaced by hand movements and gestures.
I thought there was such a thing already made. But after doing a few searches it's clear, I thought wrong.

Most people who use sign language, indeed, do so because they are deaf and/or mute, or communicate with those who are deaf. The latter group probably don't have special needs; the former group are, apparently, able to use their hands. Which, incidentally, works just fine with computers.
Regardless, it wouldn't surprise me if someone, somewhere has done a research project on it (you can always come up with some esoteric application for these things...). But I'm not sure there's a big enough market for a real commercial product. It would certainly require a webcam or something similar to work, anyway.

The ultimate user of sign language would be, of course, Stephen Hawking, he interacts with his speech enabled computer via the blink of an eye.
Maybe, perhaps, computers are way past the point of recognition.
It's only a matter of time.

It's never good to wake up in the shrubs naked, you either got way too drunk, or your azz is a werewolf.
I was thinking of something like this only less... boring and more useful.

It was just something I wanted to toy with. Sorry.Duper wrote:It would be just as easy to type.
Ahh...
ya know, ya might want to talk to the folks at Natural Point. They make Track IR and they are delving into areas a lot like you're descibing. Mostly things like motion tracking for 3D animation rendering. that kinda stuff. It's worth a try.

If Project Natal (or here) ever works as well in the real world as it does in MS demos, then something like this wouldn't be that much of a stretch. I think it'll be a while before we see anything like what MS are claiming in the real world though.
