"Why should anyone care what I post?" seems to be a very common theme in your posts.

I find it ironic though, because its almost always posted to complain about something someone else posted. In order to apply the attitude consistently, you shouldn't care about people who care about what you post.

I certainly agree. As I've told you the last few times you pointed this out, the reason I quit playing descent wasn't lack of interest, but wrist problems. Playing HURTS. And since I make my living working on a computer, I cant afford to wipe out my wrists.

Soon as I can get around this wrist problem (and I AM trying), I'll be back in the mines. And THEN you better watch out, cause little pieces of my ship will be pinging off of your hull like mad!!!!!! :)

DBB dot com was started by some third generation Descent players who:

- stole the name of this board with one tiny change
- stole the forum names and structure, made slight changes
- stole the graphics, with either no changes, or negligible changes and
- stole the icons and color scheme verbatim

They essentially ripped off the entire Descent BB and started a clone board, because they thought they needed to ride on the name and design in order to attract enough posters to make it work.

Actually the whole board is so much like this one, it occurs to me that they might have hacked into the original DBB server and stole the files in order to save the work of copying it.

A few years back when I stopped by and found out about this whole pathetic situation, they denied it to my face and actually claimed the design, graphics, and layout of the board were original.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I'll take that. \"They\" also say that those who can create, create ... those that can't, either teach, make pale imitations, or steal outright.

But everyone that was here at this board's founding that I have talked to, and was a part of it or contributed to making it successful ... they all laughed not only at the idea that anyone would ever think of doing something like that ...

... but thought it was hilarious that there were douchebags living would actually put the time and effort necessary to actually follow through on it and do it.

And then when the original creator of the board (myself) called them out on it - they tried to weasel out of it by lying, resorting to ad hominem attacks, and appealing to some of the members that took over this board to come to their defense ... and some of them actually defended the guys who did it.

Its one of the more pathetic situations I have ever seen in my life.

It is actually so sadly illustrative of the most pathetic qualities of human nature ... that it turns the corner and becomes hilarious.

UHM maybe because this BB is based upon the game???

Sup is correct 100% I'll admit that I have looked at .com once or twice, sort of from a morbib curiosity. but to my recollection I have never posted there and never will. it is pure and simple a 100% rip off of this BB from a group of people that refused to follow forum rules that they agreed to when they signed up. sad really. and I've found that in this case as is most cases the knockoff is never as good as the original.

Thx to Sup and KB for starting this BB for us to post on these many years

Yes, many of the graphics are images taken from or based on images created for a commercial game called \"Descent\". Naturally.

Because the DBB was always meant to be a \"Descent\" themed board, and we wanted to give the fans of the game a place like a \"Descent\" theme park for their community.

Other images used the \"Descent\" font in unique ways, using effects and original concepts that fit the theme of the board. I'm pretty sure Verran of the Wildcards was the one we ended up going with to do most of the custom graphics. He worked really hard on it, and I remember we ended up being a bit of a pain in the ass about it, because Mike and I were really particular about the look. We kept sending him back to do revisions :D

The copyright owners of \"Descent\" - Interplay, Parallax / Volition - had absolutely no problem with us using images from the game; in fact the developers loved the place and were frequent posters on the board. They valued having a clean, together looking place themed around their game where the majority of the community were reading and posting on a regular basis.

Because we were meticulous about the design, and equally as meticulous about the rules and moderation, the board grew into the hub of the community. It was instrumental in the design of Descent 3 - because our ideas had a direct pipeline to the development staff.
This board was instrumental in enabling LAN games all over the world. It was instrumental in bringing players together and keeping a game and community alive that might have died years earlier.

Actually Mike and I had not done this board the way we did it, most likely none of the people that ended up stealing the board and doing a knockoff would have ever met in the first place.

Other sites had boards, but they didn't gel into what the DBB became. This board became what it was because of the concepts we came up with, and because we sat behind our computers and put the hundreds of hours necessary into it, to make it work out for everybody's benefit.

And just to be clear about the division of labor: Mike (KB) generally did most of the actual pHp hacking and code work. The color scheme, the forum divisions, the titles of the forums, the layout, and the copywriting, and the original moderation was done by me. There was a certain amount of crossover, and we both had final agreement on the decisions, but to a large degree what you are looking and talking on and talking about was my baby personally.

The DBB wouldn't be here if it weren't for me. And neither would that other clone board. We wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

Honest if you knew me you would know - I'm not letting any of this be known because I have some need of personal glory. Or because I want to get props for something I did over 12 years ago.

For the most part I took personal pride in the work we did and the success of the board. That was enough for me, and most of the people around at the beginning knew what I did. I didn't need to announce it all the time. That's not my style.

But yeah, I think if any one of you were me, in my shoes - you could see exactly where I'm coming from on this. Someone told me who the guys that came up with the idea to steal the board and did it are. I forget who. At the time when I went after them and called them out on what they did, they tried to weasel around it - lied about the design, got their friends in on it to back up the lies so they wouldn't lose face.

Anyway I can picture the two of them exchanging numbers and talking on the phone about what they could do back when they were fighting with people here on the board ...I can almost hear the conversation:

\"I dunno, why don't we just copy it out right\" - \"Ya think?\" -- \"Yeah... I think we can download a lot of the code and port it over to UBB\" -- \"Hell yeah that would be awesome ... will we need to hack into the server for any of it\" -- \"... well I know this guy ... lets ask him\"

It's like weird reflection of me and Mike talking on the phone 12 years ago when we did this. But they are like some cheezy, lazy douchebag imitations of us. Stealing what we did outright because they didn't have the creativity or decency to just come up with a new concept and design.

So when I use the word \"pathetic\" in describing \".com\" and the people behind actually doing that?

I mean it. It fits. They don't have any defense for it. The evidence of their douchebaggery is staring everyone in the face. It's called \"DescentBB.com\"

.

And thanks CUDA! :D Most of the people that have any clue where the board came from and are decent enough sorts recognize the work we did and appreciate it.

We were glad to do it because we loved the game, and wanted to provide a place that would help keep it alive.

I do want to thank all the moderators and Admins that kept it going after I left. I know people have come and gone, the board has changed servers and people had to put their work into it and pay for the hosting as well over the past 12 years.

Nice work guys. This was one of the original web based gaming boards for a community. Its nice to see the original board still here, and that people are posting on it. It wouldn't have been possible without you.

I don't really like creating accounts in more places than I have to... I already have like 50 all across the internet. When it comes to Descent I'm basically registered on all the boards I want to be... don't see the need for .com.

I am one of the three people who built descentbb.com. I urge you to read the thread that Grendel posted if you're curious about the incident with Sup. I think it gives great insight into his true nature and credibility.

Regarding the reasons we built descentbb.com... Well, I guess we all had our own personal reasons, but were all brought together by the fact that .net was being grossly mismanaged. Some of the mods were on a free-for-all and had driven several well respected members away. Koolbear had recently returned and was making, or considering making some changes that caused huge turmoil amongst the staff (of which I was a member). People quit their mod positions. Things were really getting out of hand because of some fundamental disagreements between Koolbear and the rest of the staff. I offer this quote from the .net VIP forum as an example of how bad things actually got:
KoolBear wrote:[Fri Dec 30, 2005 2:49 am DBB] Koolbear: Do I give a damn if the DBB lose a
smart ass, do I give a damn if the DBB looses all the smart asses and is left with Cap and me? NO I DON'T. There's the door, go start your own BB and let people do as they have here for the last few years on your site. I'm not going to apologize anymore, people don't like it I'll show them to door.
You see, as this board got older, the people got older, the subject matter became more mature and KB, being a rather conservative Christian, didn't like it. He wanted people to follow HIS moral guidelines, not the guidelines that the gradual evolution of the board had adopted as acceptable by the members. Keep in mind the events that set this whole thing in motion were actually rather tame, even by the current standards that this board deems acceptable. I'll admit, since KB was the owner of the board, it was his right to exercise whatever rules he saw fit, but this new management style was FAR different than the democratic group-decision and discussion that the staff here had grown accustomed to under the leadership of Xciter.

The quote above was really the "shot heard 'round the world" for the folks who began working on a new descent bb. Really, all we did was take KB's advice. There were no flame wars, no over-the-top threats and slanderous talk that you'll read in the posts by Sup in Grendel's link. We simply decided to make our own bb that was geared toward more open, age-appropriate subject matter, with far less moderation and a very democratic approach in terms of the future direction of the board. I have to say, we've had our ups and downs with this approach, but for the most part, the board has pretty much moderated itself.

It's been really great to have a place to speak freely and without fear of someone imposing their morals upon the members. For 5 years now, .com has existed in relative harmony alongside .net. There are many who enjoy posting on both sites. My hopes are that these occasional flare-ups don't distract too much from the commonality here; a passion for Descent. It's really just two schools of thought. Personally, I think the two sites compliment each other nicely. There's nothing wrong with having a choice.

Regarding the design and look of .com. Yes, of course, JBomb and I built the site to look like this one. But, I assure you that it wasn't an attempt to rip anyone off. We just wanted to, and wanted others to feel at home. This board was the first bb I ever joined. We wanted it to look like this board, because we loved this board. We didn't make .com for financial gain or notoriety. We did it because we felt we had to stand up for what was right. As far as the accusations about hacking, theft, etc...well...that's just a bunch of rubbish. JBomb and I worked for a solid month building the entire site from scratch and probably tweaked for another two. All of the artwork and style treatments are original and not one element of .com was "stolen" from .net. Yes, they look almost the same, but that's because they're both phpbb based boards and yes, we DID use the same color scheme, and most of the forum titles on .com are the same or similar to .net.

I'm happy to answer anyone's questions if there are any. Please feel free to get it straight from the horse's mouth.

Thanks for listening, and hope this clears some things up for you folks who came late to the party. Peace.

EDIT: Two things...

First, I'd like to add that I haven't been on this board for several years now, and by no means am I commenting on the current state of affairs here on .net. Perhaps things are different now. Please bear in mind that the comments I made regarding .net are circa 2005.

Also, above, I mentioned that I was one of three people who built the board, but by no stretch of the imagination do I mean to imply that JBomb, Stresstest and I were solely responsible. Guys like Rook, Xciter, Hemp, TheCops, Scratch, Grendel, and instig8 all contributed in some way. But most important are the posters. We enjoy a modest membership of about 500 people (nowhere near the membership of .net), but of course, without them, .com would have never been. The staff at .com truly believes that the board is the sum of its members and really belongs to everyone. Just because I pay the bills doesn't mean it's my board. I'm just the custodian of something great that belongs to the Descent community.

Thanks for reading...

Honestly if my sensibilities didn't acknowledge a God I wouldn't pick any of them. I just can't see chance and happenstance in the world around me. The only reason I pick Christianity is because of the Bible. I honestly have searched it for years and can't find any contradictions within the whole of it, keeping in mind the authors also did not have the opportunity to read each others works.
Otherwise I see religion, and modern Christianity to a great degree as a means to enslave people. That's the main reason I don't force my beliefs on others and actually could give a rats ass about how others live their lives. The way I read it is life is yours to do with what you want, a choice is given.
I feel I get grouped with those Christians that want to control other people sometimes, which is far from the truth. I actually like smoking weed, partying and raising hell. Always have. But I do read the bible and can't see anything but truth in it. It says that people who live that way will suffer and I have. I also pray and ask for things and low and behold, I get them. That just reaffirms my beliefs and the one whom I believe in, Jesus.
But I'm against the modern church for the most part. I feel like most church-goers fear their pastors more than they do God, so instead of taking on the nature of God, they take on the pastors nature instead. The pastors easily fall victim to it too, seeing as it's normally a forceful person who takes that kind of role. It's dangerous for all involved to put so much trust in a man.
All I ever say and will ever say is this:
I look around and see creation. I see beauty, order and intent. The whole message of Jesus and the whole intent for his sacrifice was to remove all barriers. So that man would no longer have to go through another mediator, but would have direct access to speak with God himself. Without the need for another. Test it and seek Him, it may be that you find nothing and carry on. But seeing as that we KNOW we have at best 100 or so years here then it's over, it's dang sure worth some effort.
