Ever see Minority Report?
That movie's amazing future (the computer video displays and such) is basically reflected in the ideas and implementation shown in this video by Corning glass company:
So yes, it's very nearly in our future. My only question is- will the displays be fingerprint resistant?
I'd hate to be constantly trying to clean the things. lol

Their window darkening effects looks like an improvement over this opaque style one can get right now:

I'm presently using a large touch screen computer right now. But what they didn't show in that Corning commercial is all the fingerprints and smears that show up on the glass after a while of use. And using your dirty fingies on a mirror, a cleaning nightmare. Now if they made it self cleaning too, THAT would be a miracle! In Minority Report, they were interacting with their computers by gesturing in mid air. That would solve the problem of fingerprints I guess.

I recently got a point-of-sale touchscreen and hooked it up to a PC for my 2-year-old to use (he loves it!). Toddler fingerprints and smears are all over it at any given time.tunnelcat wrote:... all the fingerprints and smears that show up on the glass after a while of use. Re: Ever see Minority Report?
Foil, is that safe? I mean I can imagine a 2 year old hugging it and putting his/her whole body on the device like any other toy that's that big. And I got to wonder if that much exposure is safe. Waiters might push on that screen but they're not rubbing it all over.

Yeah, it's fine. Those types of touchscreens are solid, and my son is pretty good at just tapping/poking/sliding with his fingertip.
Re: Ever see Minority Report?
The day those go mainstream / everywhere is the day I always carry on my self a bottle of screen cleaner and a soft wiping cloth.
Re: Ever see Minority Report?
They never will.. gesture based HIDs should become standard and stay there unless we perfect controlling computers with our thoughts. We already use gesture HIDs and they work pretty well, and they should have the kinks out in a few more years.Skyalmian wrote:The day those go mainstream / everywhere is the day I always carry on my self a bottle of screen cleaner and a soft wiping cloth.

Re: Ever see Minority Report?
I bet! Kiddie fingy prints consisting of spit, slime, snot and food residue! Not a touch screen I would want to use though. At least it sounds like he really enjoys it!Foil wrote:I recently got a point-of-sale touchscreen and hooked it up to a PC for my 2-year-old to use (he loves it!). Re: Ever see Minority Report?
But Minority Report didn't use touchscreens...
I saw it recently and Tom Cruise had colored markers on his thumb, index and middle finger.
He didn't touch the screen.
People always seem to get this wrong

Really what was Steve Harris doing behind Tom? Touching a thin touchscreen sheet of glass.Neumaennl wrote:But Minority Report didn't use touchscreens...
