Storing old laptops

Have a friend that has two laptops that he no longer uses but does not want to toss yet. Store them with the batteries? Charged?.......

Remove the battery from the laptop. No difference if it's charged or not I don't think.

Charge the batteries to about 40%, then take them out and store. Check every 6 month and recharge to 40%.

Minimizes age degradation while still allowing for self discharge. See eg. here.

Not wanting to toss the old laptops because...?
Are the laptops any good? Or he does not want to loose the data on them?

if its a mater of data - Extract the Hard Drives then toss the laptops.
Otherwise do what everyone else said.

You might want to clean it out first and make sure it's in some sort of protective case. Remove the battery and any attachments.
