New Game Recommendation?
Anybody recommend a good FPS that has a good single player? I was looking at a new Hitman game and also Theif II maybe... any recommendations?

IMHO, 'good single player' is a bit of a contradiction in terms, admittedly I'm biased to multiplayer.
However, if you're looking for story, the hitman game looks nice to me. Also, Unreal 2 is said to have a very good storyline, and excellent graphics, although the gameplay is said to be quite linear, which might be a minus for a (former) Descent fan.
If you're more into the frag'em style single player, I gotta say, I enjoy UT2k4's single player a LOT more than I expected to, given the fact that it's deathmatch-oriented, although you eventually play all of the game mods (CTF, ONS, etc) in single player from what I understand.

Thief is also a good game. Theif 3 is out now too, though it requires some serieus graphics power, namely a midrange 9xxx or FX or better. Thief 3 demo
Thief isn't your usuall Unreal gunfest though. Lot of carefull sneaking and ambushing.

Heh, looks like a winner! I've been so busy at work for a while now, I'm pretty out of touch with what games are coming out when. I didn't even realize that HL2 & Doom 3 were actually so close until I did some searching on FarCry. FarCry looks like a winner, too.CDN_Merlin wrote:Farcry, until HL2 and Doom 3
Thanks guys!

Heh, yeah. Unreal 2 was pretty but short and boring. Far Cry is really good, but nothing I've played comes close to Deus Ex. I dont know if older games are your thing, but its simply stunning so its definitely worth a look. You should be able to find it for cheap. It has a convoluted, far-reaching plot, RPG-style skill points, over 20 hours of gameplay, and an open-ended playing style (interactions with different people can affect gameplay later on). My favorite game of all time.

Actually I'm glad you brought that one up, because that's been a game I've really wondered about but kind of forgot about.Vindicator wrote:Heh, yeah. Unreal 2 was pretty but short and boring. @Zappafan,
some older but very good games are Operation Flashpoint (imo better than Far Cry) and Ghost Recon. You should be able to get these for bargain prices already. There are expansion sets for both games. Although it's a comparably simple and straight forward shooter, I also found Halo (PC) very entertaining.
OpFlash is in my personal 3 best games of all times (so far) list, together with Deus Ex and Half-Life.
If you haven't played Deus Ex (the first one), I can only support Vindicator. The graphics aren't the greatest (which doesn't mean they're bad), but story and game mechanics are incredibly well done.
Far Cry is a nice game, too.
@Vindicator,
ever tried Operation Flashpoint? It's a military shooter geared towards realism, with the best AI I've ever seen in a game and true freedom of movement. You will start out as a simple private and advance in rank. You will command a squad of soldiers at times, drive tanks and fly choppers in the game. An absolutely great game. I loved every second of playing it.

Deus Ex kind of sounds a bit like System Shock 2. I really liked SS2 a lot. I just ordered Deus Ex from a store on Amazon.com for $4 (new, sealed) so I'll give that one a whirl. I picked up Far Cry today, I liked the things I read about it. That might be about it if Doom 3 & HL2 come out as scheduled.
Thanks for all the tips!

Deus Ex is way better than SS2, and SS2 wasn't bad.
I liked Far Cry pretty much, but it had brought a few disappoints for me:
I liked Far Cry pretty much, but it had brought a few disappoints for me:
- The AI is non-existant, at least it is by far not what it was described as in all the previews
- The levels are absolutely linear
- Some enemies are annoyingly tough
- Some missions were rather arcade style than fps
- It got a little repetitive after while (no new monsters or totally unexpected, thrilling twists of the story)
I'm going to buy Thief: Deadly Shadows right away. I'm a BIG fan of the Thief series, thats the BEST game in my opinion. The storyline is contiguous, the missions are always interesting, and challenging, and forward the story, and NEVER repetative. Thief is the best game out there.
