Yes, for now it's 4 player due to the extreme lighting and shadow effects.
But like stress said, OMFG³
This game ROCKS. The effects are awesome. I mean, sorry, no spoilers here. YOu'll have to get the game to experience it.
And the graphic quality is superb. What you saw in the videos is what we are playing. I'm running it at 1024x768 full but without AA and it looks gorgeous.
I'll wait till I get my legit copy to try multi but I'm sure it will rock also.

Well I think it's more because the amount of detail to process per-poly hit detection is very bandwith and CPU intensive, but yea, only 4 people in deathmatch, team deathmatch, or tourney mode (whatever that means).

exactly why i wont purchase it. i will not shell out 50 bucks for bad multi, multi is all i look for in a game
I left for work this morning at 6:00 am and found a copy of Doom-3 attached to my car door handle.
My brother in-law who was working the late 3-11 stopped by Best Buys and picked copies of for me and him.
They must be open special hours just to sell this game.
Now I need to find a way to get out of work early so I can go home and play!!!!!!!!!
8 player is better, but still too weak for 50 bucks. when it drops to 19.99 i might pick it up and give it a shot for the fun of trying it online, but i dig team oriented games and doom3 just isn't designed to be one.
Eh, I think that the unadulterated game is worth $30, if you like singleplayer and multiplayer. If you're an SP-only kind of person (or don't have broadband) then yeah, it's worth $50. Otherwise, I'm sticking with HL2.
I've never bought a legit game in my life (except for a copy of D3 for linux), and i seriously doubt i will be able to play Doom3 on my current configuration (Athlon xp2000+ , Radeon 9600pro), but this is Doom3 we're talking about sequel to Doom and Doom2, its like Descent4 coming out in 10 years from now supporting only 4 ppl multi, who wouldnt get it?
I haven't been able to play it yet, but from what I heard it isn't a "put in a quarter and kill" game.
There are tasks and puzzles to figure as well.
Not at all like Doom 1 & 2
you guys need to understand something, the server utility that will either be shipped with the game, or as a seperate download, will infact have options enabling more then just 4 players. this was revealed in a gamespy interview with carmack.
by defult, the server supports only 4 players, but he says that can be easily changed to 16-32.

Not exactly true -- D4 would have a 15-31 player limit And I'm expecting mods & enhancements for Doom 3 showing up quickly.
i played about 2 hours of it this morning. lights out, headphones up, gamma low. good game, making me reconsider buying. i hope they do something good to the multiplayer in a patch or something, becuase this game plays alot better than i expected a doom to play.
Does it play like Unreal 2 and Quake or does it play more like Halo? Can you punch guys in this one? I don't buy games for pretty pictures. I want more things to do Cause point, shoot kill.... die... point, shoot, kill.... die play gets pretty old. That's why I love Halo. You can at least drive vehicles, punch guys, and you have to figure out what gun is best for what purpose.
Picked it up at Best Buy today, so far, its been pretty awesome. Other than the graphics, theres nothing really new gameplay wise except the ability to interface with terminals in the level, which is rather neat. Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but it should be good old-fashioned fun.
Apparently there's a config option to change the texture cache size... it's set at 32MB by default but by making it bigger (say 256 or so) the game gets a massive speed increase. See this PlanetDoom forum thread for more.
heh, i went to Circuit City today and the clerk told me it wasn't going to ship until 8/13. i laughed and walked out, drove across the street to Best Buy and lo and behold a big ass doom3 standee with about 60 copies in stock
