Scrappleface has the scoop on the bulge. He cited this report:

"Object Under Bush Jacket Identified: 'It's a Spine'

"(2004-10-11) -- A forensic scientist studying photographic evidence has identified an object which caused a bump on the back of a suit jacket worn by President George Bush during his first debate with John Forbes Kerry.

"'It's a spine,' said the unnamed scientist. 'The president's backbone, in a sense, was showing during his debate with Mr. Kerry.'

"Similar images of Mr. Kerry showed 'no comparable spinal features.'

"When asked about the new evidence, Mr. Kerry said, 'I had a spine when I defended this country as a young man, and I will have one again when I defend her as president of the United States.'"

i saw that bulge on his back in the news last night.

it was very interesting indeed. but he sucked in that debate anyway didn't he? so maybe whatever it was, it wasn't turned on

I dunno, if he was wired wouldnt we have seen oh...a wire? Also, he would have probably talked a bit more intelligently.I find it hard to believe that he was wired and whoever was talking into his ears didnt tell him to say more intelligent things

Well, you see Avder, as part of the vast, liberal media conspiracy, Cheney was bribed to make Bush Jr. look like an idiot by saying stupid stuff through the wire, in order to get Kerry elected.

Actually, looking at the picture of the 'wire', if that's his spine, one of two things should or must be true:

1) Bush Jr. should be a quadriplegic, because that's not a natural line for a spine.

2) Bush Jr. was originally a two-headed beast, and they accidentally cut the head with the brain off.

It's probably the top rear section of a bullet proof vest that presidents wear from time to time, but that's a detail that is never officially confirmed so as to not inspire gunmen to practice for headshots.

I think it's probably a bulletproof vest. You'd probably wear one too if you were in his shoes in this day and age.

Looking at those pics, I think Jim Lehrer was inquiring whether President Bush prefers "Bro" or "Manzier".

it wouldn't surprise me if he was wearing a wire, too -- just, probably not to get help in the debate. Is it really all that unlikely the president would have some way to hear from Secret Service? And, as mentioned before, is it really all that unlikely he'd be wearing a bulletproof vest?

I think this is like the Kerry pen thing -- it's not particularly an issue, unless someone can produce something more substantial than a shot of a bulge in the back of a jacket.

why would he be using an earpiece for the secret service? bulletproof vest? is the security at these debates that shabby to wear he has to wear kevlar indoors in a controlled facility surrounded by hundreds of cops?

eh, read something about it somewhere how he said, while no one else was talking to him, "quiet, let me finish" or something. he wasn't being interupted nor was this time finished, so I don't know. it means absolutely nothing to me.

If he were really wired, you wouldn't have seen anything. Why would a man with access to the most advanced technology on the planet use a device about the size of a walkman? Can the GOP really not get any equipment newer than 1985?

Well considering I got the idea from Steve Porter, a local guy who used to be a whitehouse pool reporter for CBS during the Reagan years...who said basically the same thing, that since Reagan was shot most of the time the presidents wear a vest in public places...yes there is security *inside* the event but as is the case with Reagan they have to leave the arena and get to the car which means open air...suburban enviroment...impossible to verify all angles are covered....

He seems to know what he's talking about.

A bit of info: Bullet proof vests aren't really bullet proof.

They will stop most handgun projectiles, though.

The best I can see with those pics at that angle makes it look like nothing more than a fold in the fabic. Even if it isn't just a fold in the fabric and it is a transceiver of some sort, is Bush incapable of answering his own questions (bit like cheating on a test, isn't it?), or is he not bright enough to place the alleged "device" someplace less conspicuous; say, on the belt or in an inside coat pocket?

Unless Bush is a robot, I doubt a battery pack would be that huge on someone. Most of the microphone packs the press use are about the size of a Sony Walkman.
