I have a bunch of 3GB MPG files. What is the best way to shrink those files down without losing quality?

VirtualDub

and the instructions for using it appear at the bottom of Testi's excellent ripping guide:

DVDDecrypter for ripping the VOBs
DVD2AVI + DivX or Xvid for the vid encoding
and for audio compression use VirtualDub/Nandub along with ether and mp3 codec like LAME or else AC3
Then use VirtualDub/Nandub again to join the audio and video

http://www.doom9.org/ has all of them for download and how-to's
