XP Home or XP Pro

Post by Cyclone »

I am getting XP one of these days for my dual cpu system and i'm not sure which version of xp to get. xp pro is bloody expensive so I would rather not get that if XP home will work with two cpus.
So will xp home edition work with my system or do i have to get pro?

Will it work - yes, but I strongly encourage you to get the pro as it has all the networking utils plus other extra's that are just plain needed to maintain a system.

XP Home is essentially Windows XP Castrated Edition. Go Pro.

I didn't want to fork over another $100 to the evil empire. Been using home for two years and haven't had too many problems.

Any reason why installing SP2 strips the Windows loading screen of the "Home Edition" distinction and gives it the blue loading bar of Professional?

It does that to all of 'em, even the OEM versions that have SP2 preloaded. Dunno why.

And if you're a college student, you can get XP Pro for under $100 at newegg.

2K is way too slow. It takes minutes to boot up. My XP Pro machine boots in 5 seconds.

Pro, hands down.

You did learn how to fix that right? There is a registry tweak that fixes that problem. Granted XP Pro does indeed boot up faster, but not by much after you tweak 2K.

Still not worth it. Out of all the old DOS and win95 based games, D1 and D2 are the only ones I ever feel like playing again from time to time. However those feelings are few and far between and it isn't worth having a whole OS installed just for that.

Besides, D1 and D2 work in XP for me. So it isn't necessary.

Why have a 98 install for D1 and D2 when you can just run D2x and download the D1 levels converted to D2? That or run D1xOGL

I ran WinXP Pro on this comp for quite a while before I switched to 2k Pro. I have been booting up about 30 seconds faster than with XP Pro. It used to take like 4 minutes with XP Pro. Hmpf. I guess it depends on the computer ¬_¬

Win2000 here. Indeed, it takes a coffee break to boot. Given that, it's no problem. It flies once it's loaded up.
