From the videos it appears that not many took it seriously even though it was bearing down on them. I think we've been conditioned to think of these things as 100-foot walls of water and they really look sorta harmless coming in. In that first video we're probably seeing the death of that older couple as the man half-heartedly holds out his arm to them right before they get swept away. I'm sure his rescue *effort* would have been much more urgent had he realized exactly the immense power of what was coming in.
It is indeed tragic that there was no warning whatsoever for these poor people holidaying in what was some of the worlds prettiest places.
As a result of this, there is to be a summit in Indonesia for an early tsunami warning centre to be established.
From what I understand, Japan had an idea of the impending disaster but had no way of letting the other countries know because of the lack of infrastructure.

It's always nice to find the good stories among all this. This little girl was very smart. She is a true hero!

Wow... that's quite a story, and I'm inclined to believe that the fact the girl's class was studying tsunamis was not just "coincidence". With all the death and destruction, it's good to see some of these little stories of hope.
...I know, I know. In comparison to the death toll, the lives saved seems inconsequential. But to those hundred or so on that particular beach, it meant everything.
