So help me God

Post by woodchip »

As I am watching america inaugriate its new leader, I am struck by how foolish all those who oppose this once in four year event and think the cost unjustified.
To those of you who somehow think this is George Bush's moment, think again. It is the American peoples moment, not anyone persons. George Bush represents the choice of the people to choose their leader for a unbroken string of such events for over two centurys.
Having a little pomp and circumstance is a reflection of a countries people honoring the occasion to duly recognise the freedom to choose who represents them.
To those who think we should do economic harm to our country by not doing business this day, I will be going out to a local watering hole...drink a few beers, have a good meal and tip the waitress well...and say, "Cheers America, you are truely the best."

It ought to be a small official ceremony if it's all about the people, for the people, etc.
This is narcisistic kind of like the acadamy awards for politicians.

Well I don't really care about the inauguration of Bush, but I think the point of it being a 50 million dollar affair is dead on. A small ceremony would have been much more representative of the "people" that are being honored. How many people can spend 50 million on 9 balls and tons of fun and goodies.

That's about $5 an American citizen. Those are the people that we are referring to. Not to mention it is tradition.

Americas moment? Oh please. Most of the country doesnt care, and of those that do, only about half actually support this "moment".

I wouldnt have cared about this even if Kerry was being sworn in.

well...
i was at work making a modest wage (i don't expect ANY "mr. president" to understand that). i didn't get to see the broadcast.

imho, it's not that big of a deal. $50 million ain't shizz in relation to americas GDP within 4 years. i'm not a fan of GW (i think he is a rich kunt that could care less what happens to "YOU") but it's no more spectacular an inauguration than anyone else has had.

whoopee! it's like a graduation ceremony!

you can oppose Bush and not be an idiot. It's whining about the inaguration that makes some people idiots (more accurately, it's whining about the inaguration that exposes some people's idiocy.)

You know, I was listenting to some of the statements of the protestors shown on the news tonight, and I kept having one recurring thought: "I'm fine if your views differ from mine, but plain stupidity is inexcusable."

Question: did he get out and walk to the White House at the end of the drive, or did he ride all the way there like he did in 2001?

I did see footage of him walking during part of the parade, at least; I'm not sure if it was at the end, though.

You sound like the fact that he was being pelted with things had nothing to do with his remaning in the car.

Its tradition for the newly inagurated President to get out of the car and walk the final distance to the White House in recognition that he is after all, just a man. By not doing so, he just takes another aristocratic stomp on the masses and insults the people by saying hes basically better than them.

The idiocy comes from the double standard.

The people griping and whining about Bush's inauguration didn't speak a word against Clinton's inauguration which cost (adjusted for inflation) almost exactly the same.

It is obvious that some people are just looking for some way to discredit the president because they simply dislike him ... not because he did something wrong or improper.

Note: I am not defending the inauguration expenditures or the president ... I am just exposing the prejudice. I think it is a waste of money myself.

On a related note, I like the spoof of a MasterCard commercial that Jay Leno had on his show last night:

Inaugural parade: $3 million
Catering the inaugural balls: $17 million
Providing security for the inauguration: $22 million
Seeing John Kerry in the cheap seats: priceless :P

(Note that these values are only an approximation and do not represent the exact costs.)

The idiocy comes from denying the double standard.

The inauguration is a political extravaganza. I don't find Bush's $40 million or Clinton's "adjusted" $49 million outrageous at all.

When you're going to a friend's house, do you park your car a block away and walk there? I doubt Bush's security detail would have let him get out of the car because of the asshats throwing objects at him. I'm glad there was little to none of that this year.

Woodchip, at least Clinton has a library with books in it. Bush's presidential library will include booths for cocaine addiction, three bars, two lethal injection rooms, and all the reissues of Dr Seuss.

Will Robinson will bash Palzon. Vander will bash Will Robinson. Mobius will bash America. Everyone will bash Mobius. Bash will bash Liberals. Gavotte will come back to bash Bash and then fade back into obscurity. Stress will bash Gavotte. Birdseye will bash money. Mobius will bash Birdseye. Everyone will bash Mobius. Ferno will laugh. Beowulf will whine. Drakona will prove everyone wrong. And I'll make stupid sarcastic comments and toast marshmallows over the flames. :)

O.K. you got me there...but lets not forget the Clinton library special pass areas. Massage Parlor, Cigar Tasting Room where the cigars have a real femmine bouqet, Cleaning Room that specialises in spot removal and lastly the Memento Room where all the missing White House furniture is proudly on display.

Oh and Dcrazy...you are sooo accurately snide.

Pardon me for asking, but isn't most or all of this money spent on inaugurations coming from corporate and other sponsors? And aren't they spending this money to employ (at least some) Americans to provide the various services and materials for these big to-do's.

And I concur, DCrazy gets the Hammer Award for hitting it right on the head.

I visited someone that day and he had his TV tuned into the inauguration. 8) What a good sign. We definitely did business that day.

As an immigrant, it's nice to see the most powerful man in the world stay in office or step down every four years without shooting his own people. "What a country!"

BTW, where's that punk Newdown now? Is he still filing his silly anti-Christian lawsuits? Maybe the "stupid lawsuit accounts" from kook organizations are running low?

Newdow or Newdown or whatever his name is filed a lawsuit trying to stop the inaguration from having an opening prayer. He also has re-launched his pledge of allegiance suit. It failed because he didn't actually have custody of the daughter he was suing on behalf of, so he got some parents who *did* have custody of their children to join in the suit with him.

 He doesn't even have grounds on his own child so he brings in someone else's child. Typical liberal, making others bear his problems. Is he even related to the parents of the "new kid"?
