Good question. Is that good enough Krom, or does it need to be in smaller pieces?

I don't know, maybe it should have been ground into a fine powder, then mixed with thermite and vaporized, then heated further in a fusion reactor till it is plasma and fuses into a heavier and non-magnetic element before shooting it into the nearest 5000+ solar mass black hole just to be absolutely sure. :P

It was probably totally gone and beyond recovery by the time he got it off the spindle assembly.

Dented, yes. Broken up into several pieces, not as likely, but possible. Depends on how many pieces you break the platters up into.

yeah, put it on a missile and fire into the sun, that's take care of it... unless sun reads it into the space in the form of solar radiation :D

The best way to dispose of a HDD with any data that you don't want to be released IS to drill a hole in it.

Burning it takes too long, shooting it is a little too much effort, sledgehammer won't always destroy the platters. RM and any delete command can be undone and if someone is inclined, they could recover the data using forensic methods if you used a government-style wipe.

Or if you want to have some real fun, take an oxy-acetylene torch to it. Light the little bugger like a roman candle, burn the thing straight to the ground.
