Uh... no... they're talking about running D3 in a window rather than fullscreen.

Try right-clicking on the d3 exe and seeing if you can change the properties to windowed. It would make a PIF file for it, which you would use to launch the game. That used to work for some things. (UT1 can run in a window)

aww, shut me up before I could speak.

I didn't think you could in windows. But I would also like to know if it is possible.

ATM I just alt-tab out of it. There has to be another window open (firefox for example) to do it.

By the way, what is your pilot name in multiplayer roid?

It doesn't matter, .pif files and the options Testi mentions only apply to console and DOS applications, not to Win32 EXE's.

The only way to do it would probably be through some command line switch right?

Are there any?

This game was originally made for the voodoo and glide. Glide didn't do windowed mode when this game came out. Or maybe it did, but not very well.

Glide didn't do windowed mode at all. That was one of its drawbacks. It was bitchin' fast fullscreen, but your app would have to fall back to OpenGL or DirectX (or even software! GAK!) if it wanted to run in a window.

I guess maybe a good idea would be to open up main.exe in a hex editor and look for the word \"window\".

I think you are correct. Allthough, my voodoo 5 worked in a window. But I think that was a new thing that only those new voodoo 5 chips could to (VSA chip or whatever). I think the voodoo 5 came out after D3 did.

Voodoo Banshee and Voodoo3 could do windowed too. It's all about glide3, which the Voodoo Banshee premiered, and the fact that the Voodoo Banshee on up were no longer 3d add-on cards. (Voodoo Rush doesn't belong in this category for suckiness reasons.) Of course, this isn't to say that Descent3 will window with any of these cards. I think Descent3 used glide2, and I don't think it matters because I don't remember there being the ability to window to begin with.

I don't remember being able to do windowed on my Voodoo3 2000 PCI (which I explicitly bought for D3 way back when :P). DirectX flat out refused to run in anything but software/reference, and I seem to remember an explicit distinction made between the 2D and 3D subsystems of the card. But I could be wrong.

Who didn't buy a Voodoo3 for D3?

It seems like any authoritative source on the issue has been erased from the Internet a long time ago, but Google did turn up these snippets:

http://www.infohq.com/Computer/VideoCards.htm
\"Also, Voodoo3 can display 3D in greater than 1024x768 mode, and it can also display 3D in a window.\"

Yes... I got a Voodoo3 3000 PCI card for $99 so I could play D3 when it came out.

Then a few years later got a Voodoo4 4500 PCI and Voodoo5 5500 AGP when they came out.

Still have the V4 and V5 cards. ;)
