Pumpkin Carving Ideas?

Well, I'm going to be in a pumpkin carving contest tommorow night and I need some ideas. I've only carved a pumpkin about a year ago for my lovely total experience. Anyway, I'm hoping to mesh my own ideas with others to see what I can come up with. It needs to be something cool but fairly simple.
This is one example I was looking at that I like:

This requires A pattern set but I'm wondering if I could do it without the pattern.

If you only shave into the rind of the pumpkin, instead of cutting all the way through it, you can achieve more complex designs
If you shave deep enough it will still light up brightly too. Also lightbulbs light up jack o lanterns carved this way better than a candle

How about the Cack-O-Lantern?
So many directions you can go with this - it can be the trick, or the treat.

Get a pumpkin and carve a nice, elegant, simple PI symbol on it.

Confuse everyone on your block...
Kanji for Onibi: (n) will-o'-the-wisp; jack-o'-lantern
Or if you prefer even more generic:
Kanji for Kabocha: (n) (Japanese) squash; pumpkin; (P)

What's Kanji for \"Spaceballs, the pumpkin!\"
