Ugly. :P And I like the simplicity of the DBB as well.

It's simple, all right.

It certainly looks neat, but it's not DBB-esque.

Ugly.

The present format is functional and elegant. Cyan on black, you can't get any better than that (I even ripped that idea for my own website. :o )

Pros: I love the color scheme (I'm a sucker for purple :) ), and any forum that restricts or minimizes sig-clutter is ahead of 99% of the forums out there.

Cons: There's too much \"going on\" on the left side of the thread for my taste. I like the font scheme here better, it's a bit softer on the eyes for those long threads.

It's alright in a 15yo boys taste...
...but the DBB wastes it! (both sites)

Why did you link to Bet's profile? Your not supposed to go in HER profile and change her stuff. Shame on you!

I don't like that site's format at all.

I do like .net's, it's pretty spiffy:

Yea...except the links being the same color as the text, I like it. Have had this one for at least 5 years, or thereabouts.

Yeah, the link color problem could be fixed with 15 seconds of effort in the admin control panel, perhaps I should attempt to annoy Lothar into fixing that. But otherwise I'm glad I asked KB to install this theme. :P

I use DBB_Green, it's by far the best one :P

Actually I went snooping around on a forum of mine that has this theme installed, and the stupid CSS file included with it overrides most of the admin control panel settings, so it would require a few minutes of editing the CSS file to get the link colors right. Which I just finished up for my forum, ahh much better. =)

My thoughts on the other forum:

1) too busy on the left. Name + avatar + rank + rank icons + join date + location + location icon + postcount + random unnecessary neo-geo logo? That's a lot of clutter, and it makes one-line posts take up as much space as 15-line posts.

EDIT: also, the post date / time are above the username, which further expands the amount of space short posts take. Notice how little space a one-line post on this board takes.

2) too much space wasted with boxes and borders.

3) huge sigs for the LOSE.

4) The font and borders are a little too bright for the background -- a light blue or gray would make it much softer on the eyes. The blue-purple-black backgrounds are nice, but why have all 3? You could do just, say, a purple background with slightly-gray text and no borders (except quote boxes) and you'd have a great look.

Hmm. I should check the other themes; the default DescentBB one is horrifically dated (although it does look slightly better than it did under UBB).

The other site isn't much better though. There are some great examples of forum design around, but it isn't one of them.

Well I got to thinking there should be a effort and resource inexpensive addon to firefox that lets you manage and replace a sites CSS to fix the link color problem in the BBTech theme and I found one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Just add it to firefox, and then click the icon, write style for descentbb.net and put in this:

Code: Select all

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain(\"descentbb.net\") {

/* General font families for common tags */
a:link,a:visited	{ color : #CBBB85 !important; text-decoration: none !important; }
a:hover			{ text-decoration: none !important; color: #EFC70A !important; }
a:active		{ text-decoration: none !important; color: #FF0000 !important; }

/* General text */
a.gen,a.genmed,a.gensmall			{ color: #CBBB85 !important; text-decoration: none !important; }
a.gen:hover,a.genmed:hover,a.gensmall:hover	{ color: #EFC70A !important; text-decoration: none !important; }
a.gen:active,a.genmed:active,a.gensmall:active	{ color: #FF0000 !important; text-decoration: none !important; }

/* The register, login, search etc links at the top of the page */
a.mainmenu		{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important;  }
a.mainmenu:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important; }
a.mainmenu:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* Forum category titles */
a.cattitle		{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important; }
a.cattitle:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important; }
a.cattitle:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* Forum title: Text and link to the forums used in: index.php */
a.forumlink		{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important; }
a.forumlink:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important; }
a.forumlink:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* Used for the navigation text, (Page 1,2,3 etc) and the navigation bar when in a forum */
a.nav		{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important; }
a.nav:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important; }
a.nav:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* titles for the topics: could specify viewed link colour too */
a.topictitle:link	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important; }
a.topictitle:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important; }
a.topictitle:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* The content of the posts (body of text) */
a.postlink:link		{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #CBBB85 !important; }
a.postlink:hover	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #EFC70A !important;}
a.postlink:active	{ text-decoration: none !important; color : #FF0000 !important; }

/* Quote & Code blocks */
.code {
font-family: 'Lucida Console', 'Courier New', Arial, sans-serif !important;
font-size: 12px !important; color: #F3D823 !important;
BORDER-RIGHT: #47475D 1px solid !important;
BORDER-TOP: #121316 2px solid !important;
BORDER-BOTTOM: #47475D 1px solid !important;
BORDER-LEFT: #121316 2px solid !important;
background:#0D0E13 !important;
}

}
You can replace anything in the default CSS but you have to use the \"!important\" tag since the in site CSS takes priority (really, I didn't just want to push the \"!important\" button... ;)). You can completely customize anything in the style to suit your preferences other than just the links, for instance I overrode the font in the code tag to Lucida Console (default font in Notepad). Just use the original CSS for a reference: templates/BBTech/BBTech.css

Im using the default DBB theme and ive been content with it for years. I dont see a need to change anything. If someone wants something different add it in and let em' choose it.
