\"BreakOut\" Officially Released!

BreakOut is a new Descent3 Multiplayer Team Game I started working on over a year ago. I recently got the opportunity to finally finish it, and I'm excited to announce that it's ready, and up for play! :D

For those not already familiar with this game mode, fundamentally it's very simple:

  • Capture opposing players by shooting them down.
  • Your team wins the round if you capture all the other players.
  • Team winning the most rounds wins the game.
  • The Twist: Captured players can be freed by their teammates!

Features:
  • Compiled for both Windows and Linux versions of Descent3.
  • Can be hosted as Dedicated Server or started within D3.
  • English and German language built-in.
  • Simplified specs allow for innovation in future level designs.

Here's the initial download link: Get BreakOut for Descent3!
The zip comes with the gametype mod (the .d3m file, which goes in the /netgames folder), plus three compatible levels:
  • \"Alcatraz\", an incredible custom-designed level by RoadRunner:

  • \"GlassHouse BreakOut\", a modification of RoadRunner's classic CTF/Anarchy level:

  • \"HalfPipe BreakOut\", a modification of the original Outrage level:

This sounds enticing! Only drawback being that it sounds like you need > 3 players to truly enjoy it.

That's true, but it is a LOT of fun! 8)

Looks fun man. I might have to dig up my D3 CDs again. Been missing it lately.

Wonder if the BOZbots could be deployed to a dedicated server for this to insure there's always at least 3 bots in the server if number of players > 0 and < 4. ;)

True, it essentially becomes Team Anarchy with only a couple people. It's definitely much more fun when you get at least 2-3 players on each team; that's when the "jail-break runs" start making things interesting. :)

Interesting idea - though they probably often wouldn't make it out of the jail if you tried to break them out. All the BreakOut levels so far are scripted to leave the door/forcefield open for just a few seconds. That, and they likely wouldn't know how to break you out, either.

... but if SS ever decides to release his source, I'd certainly work on adding some BreakOut logic. :)

I have offered you the source already and the offer is still open if you wish to continue development on AC, the Botz and more. :)

I definitely remember the offer for working on AC; I didn't know that included your Botz project, though. :)

Honestly, I'm trying to free up my time at home by finishing up some outstanding projects. I don't really want to add any new projects right now (the only D3-related stuff I'm doing at the moment is BreakOut, and I'm trying to finish that up).

I heard there was a bit of confusion, so just an FYI for folks playing in the HalfPipe BreakOut and GlassHouse BreakOut levels:

The switches for releasing the forcefields in those two levels are 'bump' switches. You can't just shoot them from afar, you have to bump them with your ship. Makes for some more interesting 'jail-break runs'. :)

This sounds awesome, reminds me of playing RL CTF with a jail when I was younger. We just need to get the VV and SD crews to play it.

I'm hoping to organize a DRH BreakOut night sometime this coming week. :)

Seems like a great mod, but I've only played with my son, except once when Geordon joined and locked himself in his own jail so he could type... well you can imagine how that went...
