Streaming movies to Wifi enabled Tvs?

Post by CDN_Merlin »

Hi,

I'm going to be buying a new LED TV within the next few months and I'm wondering if I can stream video's from my Win 7 PC to the TV without having any other box inbetween?

Computer and TV would be 30 ft apart. I want to do this through wifi if possible.

find a 30 foot HDMI cable. Hell, you can get 3 ft cables for that much.

If there are wifi enabled tv's - why not get the answer straight from the source about if they can stream or not?

I've searched the web and haven't found any useful info on it. Most always had a box inbetween. But I dont' see why it's not possible. Just thought someone here would of done it already.

Because streaming by WiFi means the TV has to navigate the network and know how to decode the relevant video file. Also WiFi has significant bandwidth limitations, everyone I know of who play encoded video files on their TV use wired gigabit Ethernet to get it there (and also a gaming console or custom built HTPC to decode it).

if that happens, you'll experience dropouts, stuttering and general self-loathing.

It's just easier to run that HDMI cable.

I'll agree with others:

You probably want a cabled connection for bandwidth reasons.

My Bluray player can pick videos from my mythtv server. I don't use it much, though, because it doesn't skip so I can't skip through commercials on the player. I never did anything to set it up, I stumbled on my recorded programs one day on the player.

If you end up doing it over LAN, the TV end has to decode the video, thus the computer end has to have the videos in a compliant format. You probably also need some sort of a server running on your PC to supply the videos and metadata about them. At the least it'd probably be some sort of an FTP, at most some sort of a DVR system (maybe windows media center handles it? - I've always found the program to be really clunky to use.)

If you do it over HDMI/DVI, the computer does the decoding and you potentially have more control over video format and playback skipping/etc. If you do use a video cable, I'd recommend a remote for your computer so you can control things from the couch. I have an MCE remote that works nicely. I've never used it in windows, though... in my setup I can go from my computer desktop to watching anything in my library without having to get up.

If you really really need to go wireless, you might want to look into a stand alone system designed to transmit TV from one room to another.

x2 on using a simple MCE remote for the PC (I use this one), and connecting via HDMI. It works perfectly for me.

I guess I'll just connect the laptop or burn the movie to DVD as I don't want to have to spend money to do this.

Thanks

Closest I've had to deal with this was setting up my bosses Samsung LED TV that is allshare enabled with a native LAN port. So I just had to setup the allshare or I found that I could can just import it into the window media player library and it dropped it on the pc's Media devices and enabled the sharing of it and the TV could play most of the videos that was on the pc via the TV's onscreen menus.

But again the formats are limited and you need to have a pc running unless you use allshare and other devices. I was even able to use the routers wifi to link up her phone (allshare enabled of course) and stream videos from it to the tv, even use the phone itself as a remote. But again then the TV and other devices needs to be allshare enable or have some kind of DLNA feature.
All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing!

and yet, you're going to spend at least 500 bucks for the TV.

Ferno, I'm spending around $1500 in total. My PC is 30feet and at the other end of the house as to where my TV will be. I won't run a cable accross the house and since my daughter is accident prone, no need to take that chance.

I would be leery of any HDMI cable over 15 feet unless you see a compliance testing certificate to the length of cable your looking at.

well if that's the case, either use cable clips to attach it to a wall, or bury it under a carpet or floorboard. If done right, it looks really nice and you don't have to worry about anyone tripping over any cables.

Ferno, I understand that using a cable is best but it's just not possible with tghe way my Condo is layed out. I would have way to many walls to staple it to and it's all hardwood floors. It would make the cable be at least 50ft in length that way. I may just wait and buy an external device eventually.

funny you should say that, becuase other than being a condo, my house is almost exactly like yours. hardwood floors included. I'm also looking to get an LED tv soon and between my pc and the planned location, there's about five corners and a set of stairs (dropped living room). I'm still planning on running cables and I'm going to stealth it.

yes it'll involve quite a bit of work but in the end it'll look great and work awesome.

I have 2 sets of stairs, 3 door frames and my kitchen to get by so it's really not feasible for me.

Merlin the subject you need to look up in reference to the above question is DLNA. Since all new tv's (renderer) with network capabilities support dlna (allshare is just samsungs name for supporting it) streaming from your windows 7 pc (digital media server) requires little effort.

I have set my whole house up for DLNA with a 2 TB drive on my dlna av router acts as a server server also) so everyone has access whether they are wired or wireless and I can grab media off and of any windows 7 pc that is sharing. You can stream to an xbox too(dlna device)

Only issue is one older format Sony bluray player that has issues decoding certain formats, I can even drop in a srt file for subtitles and they are transmitted to the devices to along with the movies/anime

Even if you have a tv that is not dlna certified, you can just use a dlna certified bluray player.... Tons of option

I had read about DLNA but couldn't find any info that I could just use my Win 7 PC and sharing the folder and the TV would pick it up. I will try that once I buy the TV.

So, I finally bought the TV. It's awesome. Set it all up. had some trouble with the wifi but figured it out. The manual said I required Nero Home Essentials to stream movies and such. Installed it on my PC. TV wouldn't pick it up. Then the icon for MEDIA in the Tv said I required PLEX Server. So i installed that and after some setup, the TV picked up the server. It was not able to play the moveies for whatever reason but was able to watch pictures and play mp3's.

Then once when I was sitting at my desk, I right clicked on a movie file and it had the "play to" option. When i highlight it, it showed my TV. I clicked on it and voila, it streamed to my TV. Sadly, there is buffering going on every minute.

Last night, I just plugged my external drive to my TV via USB and was able to watch shows and movies without any buffering or lag.

All is good now.

No reason for software to install if you use a certified dlna equipment, just enable sharing on your windows 7 pc (home share). Not that complicated... but alas the monkeys will say nay
