And There You Go

Post by woodchip »

With all the videos of black males playing the knockout game on unsuspecting white people, would you like to guess who gets charged first with a hate crime?:

"The Obama administration filed a federal hate-crimes charge Thursday against a man whom authorities accused of using the “knockout game” to target a black man, videotaping it, and then bragging about the assault to strangers.

The charge marks the first time the administration has taken action on a “knockout” case after the game became an Internet and media phenomenon. It chose a case in which the person accused is white, even though most other cases reported in the news have involved black assailants"

So keep telling me how this administration ain't racist.

gee, after the NYPD arrested black males the other day, this is funny. You realize that the 'hate crime' legislation doesn't allow for crimes targetting non-minorities, right? No, likely you don't. Go on calling the administration names, all the while demonstrating cluelessness.

Once again slick confuses the Obama administrations policy with actual US Law.
Hate crime statistics published in 2002, gathered by the FBI under the auspices of the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990, documented over 7,000 hate crime incidents, in roughly one-fifth of which the victims were white people.
Just because Obama's Attny. Gen. Eric Holder has said it isn't possible for black people to commit hate crimes against white people and has directed his Justice Departmant to NOT follow the law and prosecute a hate crime against a white person where it applies doesn't mean there is no law!

The fact that the top cops in the nation declare it to be that way is a huge road block to harmonious racial relations in America.

"Change you can believe in".....if you are a black person with a sense of vengeance for the crimes of the ancestors of some white people.
And who cares if you can't identify which descendants you target today were born from underground railroaders and which were from plantation owners.
All the white people are devils anyway.

Liberals. Keeping the racial divide wide and profitable just like the ayatollahs manipulating the Palestinian struggle.

if the 'white person' , noted in your statistics is part of a 'minority', like gay, or disabled or whatever, sure the law applies. But, you cannot just call any attack against a white person a 'hate crime' under the Federal statute. That was my point, and likely the point the Federal Attorneys see, as well. You see, in the Texas case(Woody cited), there is ample proof that the person charged CHOSE a victim because of his race(an 80-something year old black guy). In some other cases, the proof is likely harder to come by. This character just made it easy for them. No racism in the prosescution, just low hanging fruit. To think otherwise is just the usual old-white-guy paranoia.

The law I read states race as a criteria alone, not qualified with the inclusion of another criteria. Therefore a white person can be a victim....once equal justice returns to our system.

no, I'm saying you're pitching the same old white guy whine you always do. Get over it. The law is essentially fair and good. Those of us who lived through the pre-Civil Rights Act South know that, or ought to.

that seems to be your standard response.

if the law singles out one group for special treatment, then the law itself is racist

yeah, and that never has been true. So, when a century of blatant oppression and lynchings worked against black people, and the Hate Crimes law works against more whites than blacks, the overall sense seems quite fair.

“Fair” lololololololol what happened to “equal” lolololololol

But the problem is the civil rights laws strictly forbid any laws that discriminate against people’s race creed…religion…etc.

I guess the exception can be white people…yea whatever.

This is exactly why paybacks…reparations…etc., will never work. It is impossible to make up the wrongs of the past, as I have said many times before, that simply creates new victims.

The goal should always be to correct things, and see that the injustices never happen again.

That entire “whiny” white guy thing is getting old…maybe we should just say that about anybody with a complaint…oh wait….we do.

Also, that comment about black people could never commit a hate crime (paraphrase) is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard a public official say…and they tend to say a lot of dumb things.

I would just like to say that "fair" is not a way forward, and it's very subjective. Is it "fair" to the folks who were victims of a black perpetrator that the law is pursuing the white perpetrators unequally? There is good reason to pursue justice, not "fairness"--it is in everyone's interest. What happened in the past happened, and there doesn't seem to be a lot we can do about it at this point. What needs to be kept in mind is that treating people equally is treating people equally regarding standards of right and wrong as well. If you're giving someone an advantage you're not treating them as an equal, which in itself is negative, even if you might think you're doing them a kindness or a favor.

This is something I'm learning. I tend to give people a huge amount of slack. I'm surrounded by people who don't live to as high of a standard as I was raised with. What I'm learning is that holding people accountable is the most respectful thing you can do. It need not be said that you must be holding them accountable to something which really applies to you both equally--a natural law, or basic moral principle. Holding someone accountable for not believing the color blue is the best color obviously doesn't end well. ;)

yeah, and that never has been true. So, when a century of blatant oppression and lynchings worked against black people, and the Hate Crimes law works against more whites than blacks, the overall sense seems quite fair.
So what you're saying is that you wish to remain in the past, that its OK. according to you, to be racist today, because we were racist in the past. You dont wish to move forward and become Equals.
Your only wish is to be "fair"
When is it fair to single out one race over the other?
Why is it fair to single out one race over the other?

you can never be fair, because fair is a perception and what one person deems as fair will be unfair to another. Equal on the other hand is achievable. People can be treated equally.

equality is an achievable reality.
Fairness is a fantasy that will never treat others as an equal.

There is, but under the concept of strict scrutiny, groups can be differentiated and treated unequally if there is a "compelling government interest" to do so, among other criteria. Race has been held as a type of suspect classification that necessitates application of strict scrutiny to statutes involving it. In other words, since blacks have been an historically-oppressed minority up to almost the present day, there's a compelling interest in treating certain crimes against them differently than the same crime committed against the majority group.

(Wasn't government class fun?)

For someone who tries to paint himself as a intelligent moderate, you certainly fail big time on this one. So what you are saying is, you approve of a system the promotes endless cycles of racial oppression. You must approve that after a few generations of the whites being oppressed, then it will be ok to enact a law that makes it "fair' to treat black people as the fall guy and let white crimes against blacks be ignored. You think the cyclic system of reversing racial justice periodically is something we should strive for? You will think this is all fair and good until you or someone you care about becomes a victim of black on white crime and then you will want justice be done...and not what is fair.

From Wiki…in reference to strict scrutiny,

“The practical result of this legal doctrine is that government sponsored discrimination on the account of a citizen's race, skin color, ethnicity, religion, or national origin is almost always unconstitutional, unless it is a compelling, narrowly tailored and temporary piece of legislation dealing with national security, defense, or affirmative action.”

I’m almost sure hate crimes don’t fall under any of those criteria.

Since you used Wiki...

I don't even know why woody brought race into this, although most of the right wing sites like to point out the race of the teenaged perps like it's only a black problem. This knockout game is being done by teenagers and young people of all stripes and creeds, and it's being waged against older, more vulnerable people for the most part. More likely than race, I see this as a result of our violence-loving culture, not any racist culture.

Way to go slick! You just stated a racist law is acceptable if it is used in the pursuit of affirmative action!

That is exactly the kind of message that keeps today's black poor on the Dem 'plantation'. It is exactly the kind of twisted logic that supports maintaining racial divide.

To follow that logic black people would have to enslave whites for a time and under conditions that match their ancestors enslavement and then follow that with the whole Jim Crowe era conditions etc. etc.

Nothing could be more harmful to our countries pursuit of equal justice than what you are suggesting is a 'proper use of racism'!!

Any law to outlaw racism or other forms of singling out people by sexual orientation, religion, etc. must be applied equally or else they are meaningless. Likewise any solution or correction for any group suffering must be reached without inflicting the very crime the law sets out to punish offenders for...or it too is meaningless.

Stop justifying stupid just because it is your party that introduced it!! If you or your team can't deal with the circumstance without pouring gas on the fire then please just step away from the flames!

You ideologues will accept anything, no matter how horrible, if it buys you something on election day. You guys are absolutely just as bad as any example you have ever come up with of the other side doing similar self serving rationalization! The only difference is in the wake of your team doing these things there is no Hollywood, majority of media outlets, etc. shouting you down and calling you out on it. You think the absence of that well deserved and woefully missing voice is proof your side is different. You aren't. You are Palin, Robertson, Bush, Cheney, Reagan, etc. etc.

In fact you are weaker than they are because they have been holding their own against you guys AND those amplified voices that give your side a pass!!

Funny how they call this little game polar bear hunting. Can someone remind me what color polar bears are? I cant seems to remember.
In a few of these incarnations, as in this most recent one, there are racial dimensions to the phenomenon. The current "knockout game," "wilding" and "flash mobs" all ostensibly involve young black kids inflicting violence on arbitrary white folks because of their race. In fact, one of the knockout game's other alleged names is more gruesomely racialized: "polar bear hunting." And with this, too, we already have some terminology: An attack on someone because of his or her race is a "hate crime."

its not a seasonal thing. Its a regional thing and is a result of cross breeding with other bears.

Polar bears a predominately white. You know it and thats the point.

It don't say, and I agree that a large majority of perps are black, but I still disagree it's solely race-based. In New York, a lot of the victims are Jewish to, so people could say antisemitism is the reason, although in reality, it's probably not. Violence for violence's' sake is the real entertainment for these idiot kids, because all the perps are young, bored and mostly teenaged males that haven't yet learned empathy for their fellow humans in our very violent American society. They think it's just a fun game and they like the notoriety they get amongst their peers. Of course, it's really a form of assault, or murder. I doubt they even think of a race war when they do it and we all know that teenagers don't have the frontal lobe development or intellect to think about that little detail in advance, do they?
