Windows 7 not updating

A friend's Windows 7 64 bit computer is not updating Windows and I get this message error 80070002. I have tried the "readiness tool". Start and stopped the Windows update services and run the "fix it" tool. Also, the "automatic troubleshooter". And KB 947821 info.

Any other suggestions?

Malwarebytes full scan, perhaps even full offline scans with a rescue cd.

I've had something comparable happen a few times in the past on an XP system, but I can't for the life of me remember how I resolved it. Honestly I think the one time it just fixed itself, so I just threw up my hands and said "welp."

I found this for future reference.

Perform an in place upgrade / repair as described here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

Make sure first that you have a legitimate product key and then obtain the proper installation media from here
If you have SP1 installed on your Windows 7 Machine
http://techdows.com/2011/07/downloa...h ... links.html
If you don't have SP1 installed on your Windows 7 Machine

I've had to do this a few times lately.... same deal helping friends.
You'll have tons of updates after the repair, but at least you'll be able to get them.
This procedure is generally non-destructive, so your programs, drivers, etc., should remain intact and without issue. However:
Nothing is 100% foolproof, especially to a determined and dedicated fool, so make sure you back up all critical data beforehand.
