A mouse loose in a Somerset County house may have escaped injury early Tuesday morning, but a woman who lives there wasn't as fortunate.

State police at Somerset said 43-year-old Donald Eugene Rugg was attempting to shoot the rodent with a .22-caliber handgun inside the home he shares with 35-year-old Cathy Jo Harris, along Chicken Bone Road, in Lower Turkeyfoot Township, shortly after midnight.

As he fired the weapon, Harris reportedly walked into the path of the discharged round and was struck in the right arm with birdshot.

Police said Harris was transported to Somerset Community Hospital by her 16-year-old daughter. A spokeswoman at the hospital said yesterday Harris was admitted and listed in stable condition.

State police said no charges will be filed against Rugg in the incident.

State police Cpl. Robert Clark said that while it's not against the law to discharge a weapon in a home, police advise against it.

There were no telephone listings for Rugg or Harris, so attempts to contact him about the incident were unsuccessful.

Emphasis mine

Seriously though, what kind of an idiot would walk in front of a weapon being aimed at something?! One has to wonder how many turnip trucks she fell off of.... ;)

I don't know, I have what I think is a reasonable expectation of being able walk through my house without an idiot shooting at a rodent tagging me with friendly fire! But maybe her home enviroment is a little different than mine so I shall not pass judgment ;)

I've shot a mouse outside the house before. One would have to be really stupid to shoot a mouse indoors, that would be quite a mess. I used a .22 rimfire rifle, we located bits of that mouse on the side of the house as much as 25 feet away from where it was.

Gun + house = bullets in floor = either more mice getting in or a new rug

Who the f**** shoots at anything inside the house!?! Aside from maybe an intruder. What part of Hicksville were they from again? Was it a regular house or a trailer?

Food for thought:
If the WWE is in in town and a tornado goes through a trailer park, does anyone get hurt?

I'll have you know that Hicksville is a major town of 40,000 on Long Island. I live there.

The awesomest thing I shot was a house fly... in flight... totally by accident with a semi-automatic .22 air pistol.

At first there was a fly. Then a 'splat', star-type effect, then there was no fly. u tell me.

Woot.

Wow, this story musta been all over the local news! Did you know these folks? :P (j/k!) I fly over Hicksville around a half-dozen times a week when I'm working, look up at those little planes flying overhead, I'll be in one of them; just dont shoot! :)

Heh, I decapitated a wasp in mid-air with a hunting knife once. Damn thing was alive for a good while too. :D (No I didn't torture the damn thing, I cut its head off, and then walked off for a while...when I came back outside to go get something to eat, the damn thing was still crawling around on the ground. I just squashed it, and went about my business.)
