pretty cool huh. you can really see the spiraling dust clouds (well, imagine the spiraling anyway). the brightest point houses the black-hole that is theorised to be at the center of our neat little milky way galaxy, and keeps it all doing what galaxys do (spin spin!). it's bright, coz it's hot :P, think of it glowing red with heat.

to tell the truth i havn't really had a clue where the center of the galaxy is in the night sky, too bad we can't see it with the naked eye huh. the cosmic dust (thickest around the center of the galaxy) blanks it all out.

Very cool :) I've been into the whole astronomy thing for a while, more into the sun though. The distances are Mind bogglingly enormous. :D I have a .gif of the X-17 class solar flare we had a few years ago. I'll post it if I can find it :)

Hey, that looks like the stereo static I saw once on a bad acid trip.

i love astronomy too. I always wondered why large black holes were theorized to be at the center of galaxies, but it does make sense... large conglomeration of stuff, matter, there should be something really massive in the center.

I love that site. Thanks for the pic Roid.

Yahoo News is a good source for astronomy mind candy. Here's an example:

Stellar black holes -- the remains of collapsed stars, are common. They typically harbor as much mass as a few suns. And for years, scientists have known there are supermassive black holes in many galaxies; one with the mass of more than three million suns anchors the Milky Way.

dust velocity

The radial velocity of the dust/gas differs with distance from the center...as it approaches the event horizon,{visible edge of the black hole}
it is accelerated to nearly the speed of light. :!:

You know those pictures are neither funny nor amusing every single time I've seen them.

oh yeah?

I wouldn't have to use them so much if people would stop bringing threads back from the dead. Thread necromancy is becoming a real epidemic at the DBB. :P

*sigh*, just putting a stamp on threads that keep getting dug up after they've already died. If you guys hate them so much I'll stop I guess.

Just trying to have a little fun. It's getting boring around here.
