Pilot didn't screw up it was a rail fail. The piece that attaches the missle to the rail fell off. The plane was landing, so when it caught the wire the missle kept going. The planes are doing something like 125-145 MPH then dragged to a stop in like 285 feet. Thats a lot of stress and foward momentum to check. We loose 1-2 a year like that.

If you look at the planes left main landing gear and between the door real close you can see the arresting gear wire.

All that aside cool find!! :D

also, I think a sidewinder puts out a lot of rocket exhaust.... plus a lot of light.... not a tricky one to figure out.

ahh memories, USS Forrestal.

same thing happened snatch , but turned deadly with 130 killed dmg pic. Every sailor who joins the navy is introduced to this history the Forrestal. About fire control and supression, the do's and dont's as seen in the events of this day, since everything on the flight deck was recorded (yes even back in 1967)

Oh yes! I remember all of the Forrestal videos, films, and lectures. Fire training in the Navy is quite the serious thing. EVERYONE's a fireman in the Navy. I agree Couv...VERY cool find!

Ahhhhhh yes, USS Forest Fire

As for the picture, at least that one came off in a straight shot off the bow.

Got to watch one of them go off into the catwalk tearing up all kinds of metal on the way. Two Chiefs were hauling ass after it to throw it over the side.

He doesn't have to. We all just assumed that's what he meant when he said "ahh memories".

My brother used to tell me about that ship. I don't think I'd want to be posted on it myself.

Nothing like a little fear to pump you up:

"The four-and-a-half-acre flight deck was littered with pieces of aircraft, as men struggled to clear away bombs and ammunition, throwing the ordnance over the side. One young 130-pound lieutenant found the strength to heave a 250-pound bomb overboard."
