Dear Dell Customer,

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Dell is voluntarily recalling and offering free replacements for certain AC adapters that were sold for use with some models of Dell Latitude, Dell Precision and Dell Inspiron notebook computers. It is possible for the adapters to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire or electrical shock.

Potentially affected adapters were sold with the following models of Dell notebook computers:

Latitude CP, CPi, CPiA, CPtC, CPiR, CPxH, CPtV, CS, CSx, CPxJ, CPtS, C500, C510, C600, C610, C800, C805, C810, V700, C-Dock, C-Port
Inspiron 2500, 2600, 3500, 3700, 3800, 4000, 4100, 4150, 5000, 5000E, 7500, 7550, 8000, 8100, Advanced Port Replicator, Docking Station
Precision M40
The adapters were also sold separately, including in response to service calls. The adapters were shipped to customers between September 1998 and February 2002. The words "DELL," and either "P/N 9364U", "P/N 7832D", or "P/N 4983D" are printed on the back of the adapters.

To find your adapter model Click here

We are notifying you because our records show that you purchased one or more of those notebook computers and/or adapters during the noted date range. Note that not all the above-described adapters sold during the noted date range are affected. To determine whether your adapter is affected by this issue, you should Click Here. The website will direct you to find and enter an identification number from the back of your AC adapter so as to determine whether the adapter is affected by this issue. If the adapter is affected by this issue you will be automatically connected to a replacement order entry request form or be provided with a phone number for your region. Dell will also provide a means for you to return the affected adapters for proper disposal.

You can also write to the company at Dell Inc., Attn: Adapter Program, 9701 Metric Blvd., Austin, TX 78758.

Please note that only the described power adapters are subject to this recall and not the notebook computers themselves.

While awaiting a replacement adapter from Dell, you should unplug the adapter from the wall electrical outlet when unattended. If an adapter shows any sign of overheating, you should immediately unplug the adapter at the wall electrical outlet and notify Dell.

Dell apologizes for the inconvenience caused by this issue. Shipment of quality products always has been and continues to be Dell's foremost concern. As always, if you have questions or concerns about this or any other subject, please feel free to contact Dell Support in your region.

Sincerely,

Dell Inc.,

Friend insists that his model isn't affected, meanwhile it's been overheating when plugged in for the past 2 years.

Eddie, in US, corporations weigh potential lawsuits against recalls, and don't if the lawsuits will cost less.

I had an Inspiron 5160, and I returned it because it kept overheating. the AC adaptor didn't get that hot, but the laptop sure did - 72C at the D3 main menu? The BIOS got it that hot, too. I wouldn't even want to know how hot games like FarCry, Doom 3 and other graphical games would get it.

If you plan on buying a laptop, buy a Sager or a Hypersonic. You'll thank yourself later.

Wacky. They did the same thing a couple years ago. Is making power cords rocket science or something?
