dumbest English language song of the last 50 years award?
dumbest English language song of the last 50 years award?
Has to be a song that was considered a "hit". I nominate Imagine by John Lennon. It's gotten to the point where I can no longer even listen to the first couple of notes of this treacly garbage before I have to do something; run, hit the radio button, etc. I know there are lots of good candidates for dumb songs, but this turkey tops my list.

There's a difference between a dumb song and an overplayed song. Lennons "imagine" is quite a clever song actually, matching a meloncholic melody with a very positive lyric is a sign of a pretty hot songwriter. However i agree it's been played to death. "Stairway to Heaven" would be an example of this for me, i just can't listen to it anymore, it drives me mad. I still think it's a bloody good song though.
My vote for "dumbest" of the last 50 years would be "oh Superman" by Laurie Anderson, if you havn't heard it, give it a try and you'll see what i mean.

Songs that mention Superman in general are dumb. I can think of 5 right off the top of my head that have been popular and came out in the past decade.Flabby Chick wrote:

Imagine? LOL! That is actually a damn good song. The only problem is that it is overplayed. It has a very good message that is much more interesting that most songs today.
In my opinion, any RAP song and another one I hate... I Am Like A Bird... every time I hear it I want to cringe.
If I remember correctly, Imagine mentions something about imagining that there is no religion. This is an interesting lyric. Considering that religion is something that seems to fuel a lot of fires. People go to war over it. Yet no one can physically prove anything it seems, yet they all claim they have proof. This is a big dispute in my own personal life.

...yes, but a handful are musically interesting at least.BigSlideHimself wrote:Songs that mention Superman in general are dumb. I can think of 5 right off the top of my head that have been popular and came out in the past decade.
Messenger - I should note that humanity will take any excuse to start wars; religion is often merely the most convenient.

Also nonetheless most effecient. Thus why there is a controversy over saying "under God" even in American schools. There are a lot of reasons but belief and faith are major factors in any war. It endows you with reasons to disagree and fight for what you have been taught all your life. It tends to be those who proffess words that can be changed to mean anything they want them too by taking them out of context and manipulating them with their own thoughts. Probably the primary reason I evade religion to an extent.Sirius wrote:...yes, but a handful are musically interesting at least.BigSlideHimself wrote:Songs that mention Superman in general are dumb. As an LDS person, I have had a lot of critisism about my beliefs, from many of my friends even. They insult my religion repeatedly but I know that crap flies from all sides. There are good people and bad people. So who really do you know who to trust other than yourself and your family/friends?
It isn't as much as it used to be. However, look at the situation over in Iraq. Look how Saddam twisted his people into doing the things they did through faith?
Religion isn't bad, but those who twist or bend it for their own will are at least in my opinion bad.
Now you take away all religions or everyone agrees peacefully to one religion and the world would be a much better place.

Ummm.. I think you mean Marcy Playground, not Macy Gray... and, yeah, I agree with you about that one.Sirius wrote:(I think) Macy Gray's Sex and Candy was a bit stupid... but perhaps not that bad.
(Macy Gray, on the other hand, has some excellent songs...)
My own vote for stupidest goes to either Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot" or Christina Aguilera's "Dirty".
