Netscape 8 is out

Post by Mobius »

www.netscape.com

It's 12MB and isn't bloated by the mail client, AOL messenger *OR* winamp. Thank Goodness.

It's a nice looking package - imports ALL your settings from whatever browser you choose.

Has a nice customizable interface, and a nice GUI.

It's Firefox 1.0 with a new skin and some extra features.

One of the nice features is the Right Click option to "Display like Internet Explorer" which re-renders the page using the IE rendering engine. You can switch back to Gecko any time you like.

I guess uptake will be poor - based on the (lack of) success of Netscape 7.0 - but we might see some old netscape users switch from firefox to NS8 possibly.

One truly GREAT thing for me as a developer is not having to worry about Netscape any more - as it uses Gecko - and we understand that engine very well now. :)

I'm using Firefox 1.0.1 and Netscape 7.2 up until now.

Really like the Mozilla Web Browsers.

Will check it out... Thanks for the link dude.

Been a Netscape Fan since Ver 4. Certainly be interested in it. Mac and PC updated?

That "View Like Internet Explorer" function is awfully handy, as I too am a web developer and frequently see my websites chewed up and spit out by the IE rendering engine.

I really want to know why MS doesn't just reskin/rebrand Firefox, bring back the ActiveX control support for FF, and leave it at that.

They're far too proud.

You are forgetting, DCrazy, that it is MS's perogative to put out products half-assed. Its survival depends not on its products or its advertising (it has done!), but penetrating nearly every market with ether a "me too!" product or simply putting something out there just to have it there and forget about it afterwards. If a competetor is a serious threat or MS does not have the talent todo it themselves, they can even buy a company out and sit on its assets and do absolutely nothing with it or impliment it horribly.

Hopefully this does away with that lingering Netscape-4-using minority.

TW, according to your logic, MS would be quick to do just as I say. I think Nitro may have the best explanation: they're too proud.

Either that or they have too much invested in the IE team to fire half of them and tell the other half to port FF.

I liked the Netscape 7.x line, actually. Curious to try 8. All it links to is a Beta version?
