OK, so I've seen FOO a lot recently. Mostly, I assumed it was short for FOOL, but it also seems to have another meaning I'm not sure of. What is it?

Also, what are acceptable spellings? Please vote.

foo of course, its what you name an unimportant text file/subroutine when you aren't feeling creative.

Being used at a person I would have to say Foo. Kinda like Fred or John etc etc

By unimportant text document I mean something like a phone message you save to your desktop to tell someone else when they get home in 30 minutes. It gets deleted shortly after.

Years ago I asked my Comp Sci prof what 'foo' meant. He said, 'f**k'. I think it's related to FUBAR and 'foxtrot uniform', etc.

Foo should be considered along with its partner, bar. These two have been used as function names in programming examples since forever. I theorize that they derive from the fubar acronym, "Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition", so in this case the proper spelling would have to be FU. Foo is just the classroom setting sanitized version.

I had to vote for F00 because nobody else did. Every foo is entitled to a vote!

It is impossible to make anything fooproof, because foos are so ingenious.

speaking of serious statements here is what i was gonna post alone but i don't want people to think i'm a total wise*ss (just a partial wise*ss and only for other's amusement as well)

well I thought it was amusing!

actually the spelling i've seen the most is "foo" because typing "fu" created too many problems being read by chuckling freshman Computer Programming majors i.e. (f*** you) but it was easy to type. (you can use the first finger of each hand.) so it was switched to the phonetic spelling "foo" but most everybody still gets the joke. I've seen it in 30 year old pascal manuals (for you young'uns out there pascal is an outdated programming language) and in books about Unix when the authors needed a generic file/function name in their examples. God, who knows how old the unix manuals were!
