Split from Top twenty player sighted in Abend2

I am interested in this conversation.

Starting next week the DBB will have some servers running and I wanted to see what levels the DBB'rs want to see.

Polaris and Apparition with terrain for CTF. Voice communication would help me. I get confused and delusional in team sports.

Polaris.. Veins/Halcyon. also (the pace in Veins is very unique). But Polaris.... Remember playing it into the late hours, it has a very magical feeling to it in my memory

I guess I should vote. :)

I've been having a LOT of fun in CTF Veins Guardian in the evenings. Some very kind folks there have been putting up with my fumbling attempts to learn MP skills.

I've played CTF Halcyon in the past and had a lot of fun there, but it was back a long time ago.

Unfortunantly, no judgment on the others because I've never played CTF in them enough to have any opinion.

Team Veins wasn't bad, the one without those retarded safe spawn points. My favorites would be: Polaris, Quadsomniac and Halcyon.

Polaris and Halcyon

KB when you do fire up those servers make sure you are running AC by Supersheep

It will keep the CTF speed hacks away!!! There is nothing like chasing a flag carrier and they out pace your pheni and you are triple chording and burning and they blatently are not.

Are you saying set it up for 3 way then Suncho?

I'm saying 3-way CTF is my favorite D3 mod. I dunno if you wanna set it up that way. It's harder to get a game going on a 3-way server because you need more people to get it started.

My top 2 level picks are both 3-way levels from the \"#300 Baud 3 Teams\" set.

Lol, right as I was typing \"#300 Baud,\" I was listening to an old Pyro Pimps mp3 and they said \"#300 Baud\" on the show exactly as I was typing it. ;)

Polaris = CTF.. in the old days, every CTF server was polaris, it is an awesome level for it.

Faceoff is the best CTF AND Entropy lvl of all time. it's very user friendly, easy to learn with lots of options/variations.

Then #2 is halcyon, which is basically half pipe, but better.

The only good one that I still see people in is Halcyon.

I've always liked VV a little bit better than Halcyon; no matter what others' opinions about it are, it's been the level in which I've had some of the most fun out of my D3 playing years. Now if only someone would run it without the damn MD...

Oh my VV w/o MD! Now that is a concept that I never conceptualized :P until I read this thread. It would make for a more interesting game I believe.

At chilan Suncho ran a VV game with a 60 second respawn, and even with 12 players in the game there was no shortage of weapons. Saying VV is overstocked with weapons would be a huge understatement.

Top Gun, while I would also love to see how VV would play without MD, odds of that happening are nil. But it is possible to leave the MD itself in, and take the MD ammo out, then set the respawn to 45-60 seconds. That would help. Though I think the best option for veins would be to take Team Veins (none of those stupid 'safe spawn' points) shrink it down to the same size as VV, and instead of what dwnundr did, clip it down to only 2 MD cannons and 2 MD ammo powerups. Optionally you could replace the extra MD cannons and ammo that dwnundr put in with lesser used cannons such as plasma, microwave, quad supers or emd. If you did that you would give a good reason for people to bring the pyro back into the game more often. VV is dominated by Magnums and Phoenixes because it is over populated by weapons that play to the strengths of those two ships.

Actually, I think the MD helps teach me important things.

Defensively it teaches me: Do NOT stay still, and do NOT fly in predictable patterns.

Offensively it teaches me how to AIM better. With most of the other weapons (except fusion) you can just hold down the fire button and sweep accross your opponent. With the MD, you HAVE to be dead on when you pull the trigger, and the delay means you can't try again for several seconds.

I still stink, both against the MD and with it. BUT I think I'm improving SLIGHTLY. I can actually get MD kills once in a while now. Not certain I'm any better at dodging it yet.

Yes, if you want to do just a little damage. But if you want to do a LOT of damage, you have to aim a lot more carefully. I love making people eat 8-10 plasma shots in a row (in a ship other than BP) -- they don't expect plasma to hurt that much, because they're used to people who sweep with it and hit only once in a while.

MD and fusion teach you single-shot aim. Other weapons teach you persistant aim. There are uses for both.

I have to agree with Lothar. In general, because of the power of fusion and MD and the abundance of it, people are only good with one shot. Where most people's accuracy is lacking is multiple shot weapons (myself included) like lasers and plasma, which can be devasting from someone who can aim. To me, it is harder to aim these consistently (because they're not instant, or have no splash) than MD or fusion which is why they aren't used as often.

Good point, more for me to work on. So much to learn for a player of very little brain. :)

I'll agree that we'll most likely never see a VV server without the MD, but I do like the idea of cutting down its abundance and respawn. I'm actually not too abysmal with the MD on a good day, nor do I reject it out of principle (i.e. \"no railgunz in Descent!!1!1\" :P). I think it has its place, just as every other weapon does. The only thing I don't like about the average VV game is how dominant the MD becomes, precisely because of its prominence. The tunnels are relatively small, so there isn't an abundance of room for sliding (even if I was much good at dodging it). One or two pilots with superior MD skills can really affect the pace of gameplay. To add to that, I always seem to be on the very short end of the stick when it comes to being bounced around by MD. I'll hit a person once or twice, and they'll barely move; just about every time I'm hit, I'm thrown halfway down the tunnel and twisted about 180 degrees, making me easy prey. It really starts to get on my nerves after a while. :P

(As a confirmed lover of missile boating and a pilot whose best weapon is probably Fusion, I've never really gotten proficient with weapons like the Plasma or lasers. I know that pure dogfighting is supposed to show the true skill of a pilot [which explains why I don't have much :P], but I always have far more fun slinging Fusion and impact mortars at someone than getting into a massive Plasma furball. Call it lack of skill, call it n00bishness, call it whatever you like, but I get most of my kicks by lobbing large amounts of ordnance and purple. :))

The game wasn't balanced for respawns under 40 seconds. It just wasn't. I'm not saying that D3 is the epitome of balanced games, but when you set respawns below 40 seconds, gameplay just starts crumbling.
