Yea - this took place over a 2 week period. Started out as a friendly chatting and we thinging of hooking up but she got called away to Africa to see her sick Aunt. I kinda knew what was coming after that but played it out anyway.

I this is the justification I used to block all random IM's...anyone not on my list can't get to me.

The lengths people go to screw over their peers is pathetic.

I got a similar type of e-mail from someone at random. I was thinking about stringing them along and updating the progress of the situation on my blog. Hmmm, that might be fun

Whenever I get random IM's I ask them to identify themselves- if I don't already know who they are, they get blocked. They get blocked, too, if they refuse to identify themselves.

If you like that idea, check out http://www.419eater.com/.

My favorite bait is probably The Tale of The Painted Breast
But Harry Potter & The Well of Scammers certainly has it's own appeal. :)

Don't try this at home kids, these folks are DANGEROUS and have an annoying tendency to murder people.

These scams are getting interesting. What do they expect you to do? Does she mean to send you checks and have you cash them into their account? I don't get how that is supposed to work. :?

Those kind of checks look real and hard to find anything that reveals it's not. Only a well trained teller or a smart teller will have the common sense to call the bank's number that is printed on the check to make sure it is real.
When you recieve the checks you go to a bank and cash them then send the money to that person i.e. someone from Africa. When the bank you cashed the money in finds out the checks are fake, you have to pay them back or you'll be in big trouble. It could be thousands of dollars worth of checks or hundreds of dollars... either way, you have to come up with the money to pay the bank back.

CUDA was very smart to not fall for the trap. Anytime anyone from the internet starts having problem cashing checks and want to send checks to you so you can cash them and send the money to them, DON'T DO IT!

I still think I'd be tempted to say ok and them just burn/throw away the checks and keep feeding them excuses as to why they havn't gotten their money yet. The only thing is I would have to figure a trace-proof way to recieve the checks under a fake alias. I'd might even take the check to a bank, tell them I recieved it and think it's fake, and have them check it- when it comes up as a fake, or bounces, tell the scammer the truth about the check and let them fume. (Again, this all relys on being able to keep your identity private... I don't want people hunting me down.)

heh I actually did that with a Nigerian 419 scammer. I got about two replies out of him and then they stopped coming.

"am told that its not cashable"

I told one I knew a shady arms dealer in the area, and that he might be of assistance to use in our collective bilking in of the local government... never heard back. :D
