I don't like having the afterburner on the same hand as the slide keys... too hard to chord smoothly and pulse the AB at the same time. So I keep the AB on the right mouse button. However, my actual slide keys are strange: A - forward Q - reverse S - left F - right D - up spacebar - down (Note that ...

Mouse user here. I have fond memories of killing people at LAN parties with the vauss, over outraged cries of \"freaking mouser!\" It's possible to be very, very good with a mouse, but I think the learning curve is steeper. Also, since your keyboard hand will be working that much harder, you have to ...

Re:

I wonder if Mac users would have better luck emulating the windows version instead. Very likely. The OS 9 version of D3 is one scary jalopy of an application, and harbors plenty of platform-specific bugs that nobody wants to fix. I'm going to look into running Windows D3 under Wine on OS X. I'll ...

I am, I believe, the very very last lousy player using Mac OS 9 to play D3. This makes me feel a bit like the last survivor of some ancient lost civilization. My 'gaming box' is a vintage 2002 Apple desktop machine that dual boots OS 9 and X. (However, since I'm modem-bound these days, I haven't ...

Heh. That \"valid\" trick to see around walls is clever, Krom. (And evil.) I think that a subtle hack, such as what Foil is talking about, is worse for the community than blatant hacks. When we had people flying through walls and spraying huge clouds of fusion, it was very annoying, but most ...

Krom and Testi know what they're talking about. Skilled FPS players can control, with precision, an almost arbitrarily sensitive mouse. Mouselook may not be a big deal for everyone who uses it, but there will be some players who can turn it into a huge advantage. We talk much about the learning ...

How new is the iBook? Will it boot directly into OS9, or is it restricted to OSX? Although D3 can be emulated in the classic environment of OSX, I don't consider it playable under those conditions. Best to play it directly in OS9. Honestly, the Mac port of D3 is inferior to the PC version. If you've ...

Fix For Mac PPS Bug

Many of you are familiar with the Mac D3 PPS bug, which causes players of Mac Descent 3 to look skippy in online games. The problem is that the mac client has a fixed upload rate of 7 packets per second (PPS). Most servers and clients operate at 9 PPS, so Mac players look skippy or lossy relative to ...

Re:

One of my best CTF games was against BoTs, where I ended up with more flag captures then Kills. Listen to the Goober. If a flag runner gets better than a 1:1 kill ratio, his team had better be a lot of points ahead. Kills vs. points will always vary by the level you play and the number of players ...

I've always been a fan of diving into your teammate's napalm cloud, only to discover that your teammate was killed just after firing and the napalm has become neutral.

This is especially thrilling if your teammate launched napalm towards you specifically to cover your escape.

I once dreamed of running flags in Halcyon, with just about my whole team screaming at me over voice chat to hurry up and score.

Of course, maybe I never did dream that, and it just happened a whole bunch. ;)

On Dogfighting

As noted in another thread, we all play D3 for different reasons. For me, there are three main reasons: the joy of an extended, one on one fight with another pilot; the thrill of stealing and recovering flags in close CTF matches; and the jokes and comraderie I share with my teammates. I want to ...

If the mac is relatively new, you won't be able to boot into OS9. "Relatively new" in this context means new within the past year and a half, roughly. What machine is it, exactly? D3 can be played in classic mode, but it's finicky and painful. When you're at the window that lets you select between ...

You know, given the amount of interest in this, both within the teams and outside them, why don't we plan more than one match? That way I can play a game, and everyone else can do a 1.5 game too.

We could even have a monthly or bimonthly Polaris night...
