Even if Interplay did return, would any of the original programmers? Or would Interplay hire new peeps and the "new Descent" game wouldn't have the same feel to it. Untill I see the release date of a demo, I'm not going to believe it. Would it be nice? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not. Well there is one way to get realtime lighting with 'only' 8 lights. Before attempting lightmapping, which would have worked great except for the way that d2 handles multi-texturing, I was considering simply finding which groups of lights are visible to each other and then averaging those groups ...

The light (vertex) colors are pre-calculated, so they will not change when a light is turned off somehow. It did on my version. I think the problem is setting the light values in render_side. patches, I have modified D2X so that it can have a texture's pixels' alpha calculated from the pixel colors, but the result are rather opaque explosions, so I am still experimenting with this. I think he means that all of the vertices for each face are sent to the graphics card, as opposed to using something such as a triangle strip, where the previous two verts are used for the next triangle (this saves gobs of memory bandwidth in talking to the hardware through the gfx driver).
