Re: Predestination

Duper, I couldn't find the audio you linked to. :( Just to be clear, there is a range of beliefs within Christianity on predestination vs. free-will. Predestination (or determinism, more generally) has been a highly debated topic by theologians since the beginning of the Christian church; it's by no ...

Predestination

I've recently read quite a bit on wiki and NewAdvent about predestination. I am a big free will buff (insofar as I hold that people choose for themselves and they are responsible for their choices) and see what I read, on the face of it, to be ugly, irreligious nonsense that no one could possibly ...

I've been reading a very large amount of ordinary language philosophy lately, primarily Wittgenstein and Bouwsma. They're pretty much the only books I've been reading for months on end. They're accessible, enjoyable, and they don't seem to fail miserably at replying to philosophical questions either.

Re:

I'm not going to get into the moral argument anymore. Its become a play on words and I have already said many times that evil will destroy good unless good destroys evil first. Actually I was quite impressed with her use of categorical syllogism. "God-[hypothetical or otherwise] acts ethically. God embraces vengeance. Vengeance is ethical." It's quite a good argument. Re:

I'll explain mine. My morals are not religious based. I base them on what I perceive to be right and wrong, good and evil, in the society I belong to. I see Jessica as right and good, and Couey as wrong and evil. Okay. I agree with you, as far as that goes. I think Couey is evil too. God himself ...

I'm surprised to see so many people finding moral virtue in revenge. Could somebody set out what exactly they think is good about revenge, especially in the context of capital punishment cases? I.e. set out why it is better to have exacted revenge than not to have? (I realize that everyone's ...

Incredibles. Good movie :)

Here's one:

Guy 1: \"Wait! Wait! Look at me. Look at me. I'm life. I live... I, I breathe... I feel. Now that you know it... can you really take it? Is it really worth the price?\"

Guy 2: \"I pay it gladly.\"

People are emotional beings. It's human nature to want revenge. It's also human (well, male at least) nature to want to have sex with anyone female that can be found. That doesn't mean that we should do so, or that it is suddenly justified or justifiable just because we changed our minds from before ...

For example, he was a big guy coming at you with a knife and you had a gun, would you kill him? If that were the only option I had for self-preservation. I would try to find an option that did not involve killing him, but if need be I would. However, like Cuda said: Bet51987 - I think your ...

Is the majority killing people now? The first chart indicates that the murder rate is under 10 people per 100,000 for whites. Less than 1 in 10,000 is a fairly small number of people. This number is greater for blacks, but even that is nowhere near majority status. Also, one of the circumstances ...

Sniper, I'm not getting how Sin can be passed genetically if it's a spiritual thing like a choice. Also, unless I'm mistaken, souls are created individually by God; they don't \"procreate\" or anything themselves, right? So I'm not sure how that would work with souls either.

It WOULD have been possible, but our parents chose otherwise. Being predisposed to a certain choice does not force one to make that choice. I'm not seeing a difference with the two; you "could not" make a different choice either way - if you were predisposed to make a good choice, then you would ...
