Using shader programs in Descent 1/2 is possible, but not with the Rebirth code base.

A better approach would be to add an entirely new renderer as well as a modern physics and networking library. Again, you'd need a better code base than Rebirth though.

Unreal has a glow filter, D2X-XL coronas are hacked, pseudo-volumetric lights. Simple glow is not what I wanted to go for. If I look at the fact that about 2/1000 of all D2X-XL users have bothered to donate something to the project, to give something back for what they have freely received, and let it be just 5 bucks, I think he has a point. Human nature never was in a good state.

Oh yeah, the worklog doesn't yet mention the $bullets submodel (2 faces, 4 vertices like the gunpoints, normal must point towards the ejection direction of bullet casings). Put it slightly inside the model of a gun ejecting bullet cases.
