Really impressive... Once someone says it cannot be improved you make it 15 or 20 secs faster... I like how you deal with the red hulk at 2:08 without cloak, not taking any damage, is it a bit of luck or you can do it every time?

L15 in D2 version has even more dangerous mechs, but not so bad if taken slowly. IMO the level design is very cool and even those cramped corridors in the central rock are fun. Don't you want to just make a good walkthrough of Vignettes, Ironstar, or Ironblade? Would be nice to see good runs even if they are not the fastest ones possible.

So do I, hitting a red hulk at the distance (like this one in the middle hole on the video thumbnail image), for me is lottery with 1/3 chance, dunno how Marvin manages to do it every time.
But at least I've learned to use it at moderate or close range.

That's true, red hulk strikes back there, Calmarius even said that there are dozens of them in this level, in fact, only 3 (one is completely harmless however). Just try Vertigo level 8 on cold start on Ace or Insane, you'll get the idea what is "annoying level". Catwalks where you get a lot of random damage, cleverly placed MAX robots where you cannot approach them safely, no afterburner or Gauss cannon, thief bot is everywhere and if it steals your Vulcan ...

My point was to make at least one place that can kill the player in L5, like that 4 Lou guard hall earlier. Not sure you can achieve it with cloaked hulks, but if you don't want to use Lou guards, adding a few cloaked hulks can help. Although they can work in blue key area and the yellow one, I don ...

Agree on cloaked hulks in L5 . They could be used around the blue and yellow keys, or in the big chamber near the boss where the diamond claws are . About Lou guards, it was nice to have them because the rest of the level was rather easy, also they blend well with the surrounding. And I like seeng ...

Well I played L4 and 5 again in the new version, and I'd say both were almost trivialized by those nerfs. And I see downwards difficulty curve from L4 to L5. True, the grated room with stuff and secret teleporter is opened by the switch near the blue key, possible to hit through the grate near the 1-st shaker secret. Ok thanks! I tried the numeric counter, great! Was able to beat the problematic AF L12 boss with it, only problem (very minor) is that in "no cockpit" mode the counter is not right at the top. Did not tried it (never had a stick), should be the same speed, it has the advantage that you can fly better but some people say aiming is more accurate with the mouse... Worth trying anyway.

I'd try dxx-rebirth too, original DOS version has problems with mouse controls... In general, you should learn to turn the mouse steadily, as there is rotation speed cap in Descent, and faster mouse movement just has no effect which is a bit counterintuitive...

In fact he spawns (sometimes) cloaked diamond claws that drop the cloaks. Another misleading thing about this boss, I never figured out when a shaker hit counts as full direct hit (it is 1000 damage based on Calmarius AF L12 vid where he added numeric boss HP counter - quite easy for him as he plays ...

Use smart mines, there is a pack in the room with 2 Lou guards, there is a 4 guided missile pack there, too, and probably some other secret (which I ignored)

Tried the Calmarius route for level 21 but it's going even worse for me than my own previous solution. Guess I'll stick to that and keep trying. Ok, thanks a lot! tested the boss HP counter, first thing - it does not appear immediately when I see the boss, probably only on the first hit? If so, it is ok. And yes, numeric counter is essential. I tried a fight against AF L12 boss, hit with all my missiles and stil did only 50% damage to it ...

Thanks, will check the thing tomorrow, and I also agree that numeric boss HP counter should be present (as it will be hard to see whether an earthshaker did 900 or 1000 damage looking on the bar in the middle of the fight...).

Yes, probably does not worth it - you can lose much more time just because of bad luck... BTW at last I did this level myself insane cold start clearing the reactor room matcens 3 times, will upload it soon. It was a hell of a challenge, too! Amazing run, but I still think you can be even faster if you will avoid returning for 2 smart missiles. Ofc you can lose much more than gain due to randomness of the level and increased chance to die in the reactor room, but still looks like a chance to improve time.
