wmv coded

Post by woodchip »

Don't know if I did anything but lately links here (and elsewhere) to .wmv presentations appears as code. Perchance did I turn off the windows media viewer as default and that is the cause. Or is it something else?
If I did turn the player off as default how does I turn it back on?

Are you using Mozilla Suite or Firefox? Open up Windows Media Player and go to Tools > Options > File Types and make sure there's a checkmark next to Windows Media Video file (wmv). If it still doesn't work, go back to Firefox/Mozilla and type about:plugins in the address bar and make sure Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library is listed, and that the MIME type video/x-ms-wmv is Enabled.

Mozilla doesn't go do something stupid like IE and guess the file type based on the extension, rather it goes by what the web server says what it is, the files MIME type.

could be the lately all the links you've hit are on servers not configured to properly send MIME types with streams.

there is an extension fore firefox/mozilla that will capture you the http headers for all the links you click, pick a wmv and see it says.

That could be the case flip. Some sites work and others don't. Wasn't sure if there was some codex I was lacking but if I am then I don't know what it is.

If it only happens on some websites, then yeah it's probably misconfigured servers.

You can also just copy and paste the URL of the WMV file and hit SHIFT+ENTER (or SHIFT+RETURN, depending on your keyboard) to download the file manually.
