I was watching when the wrinkles appeared, and they weren't matching up. They'd be in sync, and then out of sync, and then back in sync. That simply can't be a phase issue if the animation is a single period.

It might be that the animation has multiple periods in it, and they're not all the same length, and we're looking at a phase difference on the order of the period... or it might be that mozilla doesn't update the frames on all images at the same time (I don't mean staying on the same frame, just, whatever frame you're at, updating the next one at the same time.) Whatever it is, though, it's not just a simple "image A is 2 frames ahead of image B" issue.

They look exactly the same to me, just hit back and forward once in the browser so they load from the cache and are in sync.

Didn't do it for me... back and forward and back and forward, and they still change from being in sync to out of sync and back to in sync.

Am I the only one seeing this?

I wish I had an easy way to make an animated gif of what I'm seeing. Anybody know of a way to do this?

I'm using Firefox. One is exactly half phase ahead of the other, but they do not change or rotate phase. IE they don't come into sync then lose it again.

I'm seeing what Lothar is seeing... definitely a period/frequency difference, not a phase difference. It's the regular "in sync, out of sync, in, out, in, out..." pattern, kind of like the 'beat note' effect of two similar-frequency tuning forks.

I'm still on IE (don't flame me... it's my brother's computer; if it was my machine, I'd go to Firefox).

Maybe someone can view in both browsers and do a comparison?

(edit: :? Whoa. Okay.. weird. I went back and looked, twice, still in the same browser... and now it's all perfectly in sync. No phase difference or period difference or anything. It's starting to make me wonder if it was just some kind of visual illusion, related to movement of the eye trying to see the timing of both images at once... strange.)

WOW i thought it was a visual illusion at first too, and up till now its been 100% in sync for me; but it just loaded for me, and now, the two are COMPLETELY out of sync.

Perhaps it depends on how quickly each server thats hosting the files sends the file to your computer

I really have the most delicious candy: Lollipops with bubble gum centers, juicy fruit-flavored candies of assorted colors and shapes, creamy chocolate bars with caramel and peanut toppings. That's just the tip of the iceberg. I have access to the top candy manufacturers in the world. I can use my telephone to dial Switzerland and they will fly me two shipments of their finest Milk Swiss. I can take a road trip across the country to pick up these really delightful jellyfish I discovered in this gift shop near Sacramento. I'm not kidding, my candy access is really unlimited.

And yet, whenever I find a small child to give my candy to, they always seem hesitant. They can have whatever they want... so why are they so afraid?

I'm positive that there's nothing wrong with my candy. I always make it a point to taste a sample from each batch before even considering distributing it to children. I analyze the scent, taste and texture with the finest laboratory equipment money can buy, to ensure that my candy is only of the finest quality. I wouldn't want my good name associated with any poor candy. Imagine what would happen to me if a child, eyes full of wonder and innocense, tasted my candy and began to go into terrible spasmodic convulsions? No, perish the thought! Only the finest candy for my little friends.

I must admit, it can sting my pride terribly to return home after a long day's drive with my burlap sack still stuffed to the brim with candy. Is my candy really that bad? I taste it and it's delicious. Even the saltiness of my tears can't deny the wondrous pleasure my candy provides my tongue.

It's always the same: by the playground, or the library, or the busstop, the mere mention of the word "candy" seems to make children quake with terror and run away. Imagine my horror, when one day while perusing a schoolyard for new young friends to offer my candy, a teacher, a TEACHER, yelled at me to leave the premises or she'd inform the police on me. Excuse me, but is it a crime to offer candy to youngsters? Can a stranger not share the happiness that is powdered licorice and sour balls with the future generations of this great land of America, Home of the Free?

More than hurt, I'm ashamed and dissapointed. With bated breath, I count down on my calender and await that one day in October when candy flows like a river of blood and children flush with these sacrificial offerings come to partake of my nectar. I take it all in, the giving and receiving of candy and open young hearts. This one day feeds me throughout the long days of drought ahead.

In the old country, it was not this way. Children would happily partake of my candy with no questions asked, at any time of the year. Perhaps, I was mistaken to flee across the ocean. Perhaps, the stories I heard of America's children were incorrect. Perhaps it is time for a change of strategy.

Maybe my mistake is not in my choice of candy, (which by all standards is sublime), but that the youngsters already have eaten their supple bellies full of candy at home and are in no need of more? Perhaps the lads would prefer toy airplanes? And the young ladies, bonnets or a pretty summer dress with ribbons and crocheted flowers? Would they then come for a ride with me and play in my car?

It's terrible, you know. It'd be a real shame if that's the route I'm forced to take.

My candy is really delicious.

The avatar synchronization appears to be related to scrolling. Every time I scroll off of and back onto Lobber's 3x3 illustration, the avatars are at a slightly different phase from each other (sometimes synced, sometimes not). If I look at them without scrolling at all, they remain how they are without changing. This suggests that the browser doesn't "play" animated gifs while they're off the screen, and either starts them fresh or resumes them when they scroll back onto the screen.

That may account for the appearance of phasing--the avatars change their relation as I scroll down the page looking at alternate posts by Lobber and BigSlide.

Observed in Opera 7.

[Edit: Confirmed with my cube avatar. The browser re-starts the animation every time I scroll onto it, so if I rapdly scroll it on and off the page, I only see the first few frames.]

Nope. Scrolling doesn't change it in my browser. It also doesn't reset the cube.

I'm on Opera and i'm seeing the same as Lothar.

Out of phase, maybe there's a reason why....but i'm not that interested enough to care..i've got the flu again, and i'm in my miserable twat mood.

I think some browsers only display animations while the picture is visible. Sometimes the avatars are different, sometimes they're the same--I'm using mozilla suite.
