Hey peeps, here's a glimpse at the place I work at: a small web site created by yours-truly in just 2 days.

Note: No tables used.

Quite frankly, it shows. It's a great start, but it always takes a bit of time and tweaking on any layout to lose that "GTK+" feel. Many web site templates suffer from this problem. The best web sites don't use bevels, minimize margins, etc. One of the best sites I've seen is the MySQL website. The UI and design are clean and minimal, emphasizing the text. 12-point Verdana and big padding detract from the coherence, making the site seem like a bunch of modules attached together.

Like I said, a great start, but it can definitely be improved.

Heh, but it won't be.

This is only to show our clients who is working on their projects, and nothing more. The site won't be indexable, so it'll be "invite-only".

The site isn't any kind of template, except so far as I created it. It has that "plugged together feeling" because it *is* plugged together from .INC modules using SHTML.

Just thought you folk might be interested to see where I work.

I see nothing majorly wrong with that site. It's not dificult to navigate, and the layout of information in the right hand section is easy to read. My only complaint is that it's so narrow that it requires no horizontal scrolling on a 640x480 17"(I checked, curiosity got the better of me). Do your customers actually use 640x480?

That and with the dotted borders it looks like it's constructed out of cupons.

Yeah, I used to go for wide sites, but text columns wider than about 500 pixels reduce comprehension and slow down reading quite substantially, so if at all possible, I force sites to render properly within a 640 window. (Often the designers won't agree with me, so I have little say in the matter...)

Coupons - LOL.

Many of the sites I've done recently: i.e. http://www.carletonsheets.com and http://nycity.com

Are bounded by solid lines, 1 pixel wide. They were beginning to drive me crazy - so I switched to dashed borders for this site...

Personally, I *really* like very simple design. That may well be because I'm incapable of anything else though...

I have a similar philosophy, though it has more to do with not being bothered with much in the way of artistry.

Actually my site is minimalist to the point of not even using images for its design... I'd put up a link but the host seems to be down, again...

That's a cool job.

Do you mind if I ask how much you make? I'm working toward getting into website and application design, and it would help me to get a feel for the value of the work. I know first-hand that it's very specialized, especially when done well.

My dad has told me about a guy who was fired from the bindary at his company, who went on and started making $40/hour in website design in Chicago.

I'm looking to work for myself, but every bit of information helps.

The coolest staff bio stuff I've seen is on the website of this company I used to do a lot of work with called Bates Neimand. Well written and simple.
