Um... the NES cartridge connector was a bad design. Things improved a lot from then on.
You can also give them pretty much as much capacity you want... although I have no idea how much that would cost in FMV-riddled games. Probably far too much.
Other than that, solid-state generally is quicker and more energy efficient than CDs... but anyway.

oh my goodness. imagine the insane technology you could put into solidstate cartridges thesedays!
i remember a snes game that had an early form of 3D card integrated into the cartridge. take that idea and run with it and andand&&&&&&.
*head explodes*
remember that the biggest problem with custom hardware is that it's hard to get software to support it - so it's hard to get ppl to buy (and install) your hardware JUST to play a game. but if the hardware is part of the game (cartridge) itself, then you can go nuts with it, essentially designing your own hardware and software - for the cheap - both at once.
you could have dedicated hardware physics engines. chips that perform a specific function for your very game. i mean seriously, you could justify designing and using a chip that solely models a specific in-game character's AI. A DEDICATED CHIP FOR AI!
good grief, the performance would be staggering.
i'm drooling.

You might be thinking about Donkey Kong country which, iirc, had some sort of co-pro developed by SGI on it. There was also the SuperFX chip which was used in a number of games but I don't think it was advanced as what was in DKC. Sega also had a "3D" processr, the VDP, which was used in the Genesis/Mega Drive port of their Virtua Racing arcade title. The problem with putting extra hardware in cartridges like that though is that it increases the cost and becomes fairly cost-innefficient if a number of games start using it.

PSP = Portable Porn Device
I didn't know this thread existed, and I didn't bother posting about me getting mine cuz about 80 percent of the people here criticize everything.
Anyway, I was the first one to get it at the gamecrazy I went to. Waited outside, and got it. This thing is cool; however, it requires you to buy stuff for it. Memory stick with more space, car adapter, screen protector, screen armor, warranty, then of course the games. the total is well over 350, but it's worth it.
I also visited many forums and found a couple of ways to browse the internet on it.
Here's the most common way.

The cool thing is, it really works. In either case, if you dont have wipeout, sony will release a patch soon enough so you could officially browse the web.
I personally didn't find the battery thing a problem. I have an AC adapter for the car, and a normal one that plugs into my wall.
