Drive Plays Tones

Post by bash »

Maxtor DiamondPlus9 ATA drive won't spin up and makes a few little song-like tones followed by a nasty sort of mechanical sound, then repeats this sequence several times before going quiet. This is not my boot drive but the system hangs at the BIOS screen if the drive is plugged in. The noises and such happen even if only the power is connected (no ribbon) and I enable power to the system. Dead drive? Anything I can do to try to revive it? Any data recovery services folks would recommend? Thanks for any help.

Yep, dead. Found a thread through google that goes a little more in depth about it's inability to spin up and the error tones. They recommend tapping and even chilling it in the freezer. Tapping didn't help--nor banging--so I opened it up and tried to jumpstart the platter with a pen. No luck. It's keeping the ice cream company for a few hours. Lots of old stuff on that drive *sniff* that's gone forever. Next system gets RAID.

Heh, my friend's old IBM Deskstar drive made that noise. Comparable to Pac Man.

If theres no damage on the platters, you could always take the drive to a data retrieval company. The freezer solution is obviously a temporary one, and the more you use the drive the more data you risk loosing. That mechanical noise you heard could be the heads coming into contact with the platters, which is BAD.

Trying to jumpstart the drive by spinning the platters with a pen = bad idea... Breaking the seal and letting dust in is just as good at trashing data as the heads scraping the disk.

The thread commences in 2002 but the complaints keep coming up until the present. Apparently this was sort of a dog series/model. Anyone with a Maxtor DiamondMax9 should take note, especially if it starts intermittently disappearing from File Manager. I should have taken that as a sign. Anyway, no more Maxtors for me.

that sounds electronic, is there a little speaker on the drive or is that coming out of the PC speaker?

I have never heard anything like that before.

Hey Mr.Spellchecker, you need to talk to Mr.Complete-Sentence. Perhaps mama grammer will let you stay up late.

Funny you should say that because one of the things I lost was a home video of the first time my cat ever came into contact with whipped cream and went bonkers for it. The way her eyes popped wide open upon first sniff was straight out of a cartoon. The filename was whipped_pussy.avi. I always figured if I ever got raided by the feds they would see that filename and have an AHA! moment before actually viewing it. ;)

LOL.. that would be funny to watch.

and ace, next time you want to post something, instead of clicking the 'submit' button, move the mouse up to the top right and click the 'x' button.
