Venice core for AMD
Venice core for AMD
Will current mb's support the new venice core CPUs?
and does anyone have an idea of what the venice chips are going to cost?
I'm wondering if I should wait for the venice cores to hit the shelves before purchasing my mb and chip, or if buying a 3200 winchester now, and dropping a venice CPU into the same mb a year down the road...

yes they will (possible bios update needed)
probably about the same as the original winchesters when they came out.
You won't be dropping a venice cpu into your m/b a year from now, b/c AMD will release it's dual core cpus pretty soon, which will be comatible with 939 socket. So you either get a winnie now and upgrade to dual core cpu, or get venice now and upgrade to dual core cpu

ack! more decisions.
So...will the same s939 mb take a dual core CPU, a current winchester/newcastle CPU, a venice CPU, AND an FX (like the FX 55) CPU?
sorry for the dumb questions...up till now I've only dealt with intel...
is there a time frame for when the venice CPUs will be available? what about the dual cores?
this has a lot to do with my upgrade decision (as in, upgrade now, or wait a few months to get much more bang for my $).
Thanks!
RM

that seems to be the case. As long as you have socket 939 motherboard, you should be able to use any of those processors. Of course you'll need the updated BIOS.
Venice was supposed to be shipped to retailers on the 4th of this month, but so far the retailers seem to be quiet on when they expect to receive the shipments.
Probably by the end of the month. Noone knows for sure.
As for the dual core cpus, i don't remember to tell you the truth. I know intel already has the new platform and CPUs finished up. Previews/reviews are already up on a few websites. I don't know when AMD plans to release theirs. Gotta be either q3 or q4 of this year.
I am in the same boat as you are, i skipped the winchesters simply b/c i couldn't get a pci-e videocard at an acceptable price. Now i sort of want to wait for r520 and dual-core cpus, lol.

Dual cores will mostl likely be in June.
A BIOS update will be required for Venice.
Oh, and everyone be sure to switch to Intel. Cause like Ace says, you don't have to worry about what CPUs you can use in your socket. Each CPU has it's own fuckin socket, so you just buy a new mobo ever time you upgrade the CPU.
